Tig welding chromoly cage?
Chromemoly has to be TIG welded per NHRA specs. If you MIG weld it it wont pass inspection.

Y does it need to be TIGed? is the penetration not good enough with a mig?
well i wondered the same thing... i have a very nice mig welder.. everyone said i needed a tig..
but ive personally watched/helped a guy weld one in with mig... so im like 100% sure it can be done..
now i dunno if it affects strength in a crash or what not.... but im pretty sure it will hold it in place and get those through tech who are trying to save weight with a chrom. bar without having to buy a tig.....

Most of the time when you tig weld Chrome-moly you are using a mild steel filler wire like ER80S-D2, instead of a chrome-moly filler. If you are going to use a chrome-moly filler you will need to heat treat the metal after welding or it will be to brittle. But heat treating is not necessary with thinner walled materials. Tig welding gives a stronger weld than mig welding becuase you will get greater penetration and you can control the heat input more with tig.
There is a reason that NHRA requires that chrome-moly to be tig welded. Its not just for the fun of it or the way the weld looks. It is becuase it is stronger.
