Question Weight vs Horsepower

I don't know if this has been covered, but how does reducing weight equate to horsepower? For example, if you removed 100 pounds of weight, how much horsepower would you have to add to your car (without removing a hundred pounds) to get the same performance boost?

Rule of thumb is 100 LBS = 10 RWHP. I would think that this is diminishing as HP increases and weight decreases.

Thanks Steve, I thought you guys must have had this figured out, and I WAS looking for a rule-of-thumb. This is great news to me because I'm going to find ways to make my car lighter. Sort of like virtual horsepower. Cool.

Thanks, I was aware of the 1/4 mile rule-of-thumb, but I never came across weight reduction converted to horsepower. It's pretty cool to be able to think of every 10 pounds you remove, generally, as like adding another pony. It makes the sacrifices easier to live with.

100lbs removed= .1 in the 1/4mi. NOT ALWAYS TRUE. i removed the air conditioning, air system and front sway, all= about 58lbs and i gained 2 tenths in the 1/4mi. removing weight off the nose is begger then taking it out else where. light k-members w/a-arms =45lbs,fiber hood =30 and light battery=25lbs. i wonder how much you would gain with the 58 and 100 more lbs off the nose

Interesting, maybe with less weight on the nose you gained traction too?

If removing 100 pounds is approximately 10 hp, is it generally thought that it takes about 10 hp to gain a .1 in the quarter?

Thanks Zepp, I can't wait until spring to get to work on making my car a lean/mean fighting machine. Taking off weight is almost like free horsepower. Lotta bang-for-the-buck there, not counting the sacrifices.

The et change per 100 lbs depends on your power level.
