Taking the dash out is a pain, that's for sure. Good time to go after the passenger airbag if you haven't done that yet.
Ah, so 17 is just the ductwork. Maybe I better get busy. I do already have the passenger air bag out but all I had to do was move the dash back a little for that. Didn't have to completely remove it.

What chunk are you talking about?

I don't think the dash was that hard to take out. It definately wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. Just don't make the same mistake I did and try to pull it out of the car alone. Make sure you have someone help wiggle it out, and pulling the steering wheel first will make your life much easier.

The whole box is a big "L" shape. I cut off both ends of the "L", but left the "corner". The part with the blower and the heater core. That part isn't included in the 17 lbs either. So if you get rid of all of it, that's even more weight.

Now I'm with you.
So far I have the heater core, ac evaporator and some ducting out for 8 pounds savings. More to come. AC evaporator weighed right at 4 pounds. Heater less.

This is about an hour job and doesn't require the dash to be removed. Not sure about the rest but appears to be much easier with the dash out. I think that "L" piece will come out without the dash out. What did you cut out of the "L" piece? Is the "corner" the part that holds the box with wires right behind the glove box? (what ever that is)

I cut off all the part on the engine side of the firewall.
And the part over the tunnel that had most of the flappers and openings in it.

The part that's remaining is what was the corner of the L, but now it's just a cube. Yep, it's behind the glove box, and has the resistor coils for the blower, the blower itself, and the heater core. And the cable and flapper for the warm/cold dial.

I keep meaning to weigh it too, but just haven't gotten around to it yet...

Thanks John D. I haven't worked on mine anymore but will get around to it.

I've just about finished getting everything out from under my dash now. I still have quite a lot of AC ducting. So far I have removed 24 lbs. I did not remove the dash to get it out.

I used some aluminum sheet attached with a couple screws and aluminum tape to cover the big opening and upper smaller. I painted the sheet black on the engine side. This is .008 thick aluminum sheet that only negates a couple ounces of my weight savings. Pretty happy with the weight reduction and looks. Can't tell any thing is gone from inside the car as I only removed what you can't see.

My plugs are sure going to be easy on the passenger side now.

Awesome! I was doing some math tonight and looked at the sticky at the top of the page for weight reduction. With everything, I have removed over 300lbs. That is the driver/pass. seats,a/c,heat,airbags,carpet,front bumper support, impact foam, spare tire, front sway bar,t-top holder, wishield fluid res.,wipers, motor, interior brackets(so far),stock steering wheel, rear seats, all seat belts, some wiring. Now it's time to put some weight back in the car. I also moved the battery to the rear, which added a little weight in wiring, but i figured the weight transfer to the rear would be worth it!
