Sealed batteries still produce gas if they are overcharged. The main reason for the box is to prevent the somewhat explosive gas from getting in the driver area and vent it to the outside. Even though sealed/gel batteries produce very small amounts of gas rules is rules.
There is also minimum mounting hardware requirements, they dont want that 30lb battery flying around the inside of the car and hitting you in the head if you crash - that would suck

Not to bring this thread to far back from the dead but...
I to also ordered the BMR battery mount, then realized that the NHRA rules are not up with the times and dont discriminate between battery types.
My question is has anyone who IS using the battery tray found a battery box that fits in the tray? I havnt been able to. I plan on running a optima battery.
Or--
Has anyone using the tray with a dry cell not had any problems at Island or Englishtown? (couldnt hurt right?)

The BMR tray is not big enough to hold the battery box from what I can remember. Its not much bigger than the battery itself and my battery box is ALOT bigger than the battery itself so I dont see that working out for you.
