Default Mcleod Bellhousing???

Hello,
I need to get a mcleod bellhousing...for safety(wife thing) and was wondering how many of your hard core M6's have them or don't have them and why if you don't?

Where's the best place to get one?

Thanks

I have one...need to do some grinding/sanding of the rear cover to get it to clear since the cover sits further back in sections than the mounting flange. This is a problem for the plate that must sit behind the flywheel on a SFI 6.1 setup

Fireball why did you put yours in, rules or just safety?

How many clutches in ls1's have been known to come apart?

Thanks for the info

I race ALOT, so I did it for safety and regulation. Anything faster than 11.49 is supposed to have one

I can't wait until someone makes one that doesn't require so much measuring/cutting/grinding/sanding (aka, a little more of a direct bolt-in). It's definitely worth it though IMO, especially if you have a heavy duty clutch and race the car frequently.

I have one. I used a die grinder with a cutter bit to shave the aluminum.

It's not the bellhousing's fault that the back of the motor isn't a single plane (flat). I suppose if you wanted to get fancy with a stamping machine, you could stamp the block plate with a dent to clear the back of the block down towards the oil pan. But it doesn't take too long to do (maybe an hour, tops, of grind / fit / grind). I did have to grind my starter a little also.

The PITA for me was that I tried to use the allen headed bellhousing bolts included with the bellhousing. Bad move. They're SAE bolts... the block is metric threads. One helicoil kit later, and all is well. I ended up buying some metric threaded M10x1.5 x 25mm (I think) allen head bolts from McMaster-Carr. I have extras (bought the minimum 25 pack), so if anyone needs some, PM me. You need allen head bolts because the bolt hole to bellhousing clearance is darn tight, a socket wouldn't fit well on a regular hex head bolt.

I got one after seeing the pics of some clutches failing. Got mine from thunderracing.

Here's a couple links to "Fireballs" and my installs.

That's weird. Mine were the correct thread.

I'll give thunder a call....hope there not on back order.

I would do the blanket but I would prefer to get my leg chopped off with a fast moving piece of metal

Seriously, do you realy think a blanket will stop a clutch blowing up?
Kind of like the the old bandaid on the gun shot wound.

Thanks

Sure, a kevlar blanket should do the trick. The problem is it won't protect your block.

The blanket's a bit of a pain to install if the engine & trans are in the car, but it can be done if you drop the tranny crossmember and let the assembly tilt. If the trans is out, it's easy as pie*. I ran one until I got the McLeod.

As for the bolts, yes, they do go in... but once I started to tighten them down, they pulled threads loose. At least that was the case for me - and then I compared them to the stock bolts - wrong thread. I ended up helicoiling 2 holes, and just cleaning the others with a tap. That was no fun (had to let the front K-member drop to get enough tilt on the motor to get the drill up in there). Just another day working on my car.

*how easy is pie anyway?
