No need to make any special tooling. I went to Sears and bought a set of metric sockets that allow you to use a wrench on the end. VERY slim so it's easy to get to the bolts. The damn glue makes it hard to turn though .

You'll need 10mm for the bolts towards the door hinge side and 15mm for the bolt on the door striker side. I was able to pull the bars through the grommets on the doors.

I know this thread is old but I was very helpful for me. I figured I would add a little more to it for future reference.
Thank you for posting pic's of the tols you used!!!!!

I can't wait to pick them up and get those bars out, thanks!

I got 19.4 #'s for both bars and brackets. I used the same sockets as sscam68, but with angled ratcheting wrenches

I saw those too!! I thought to myself "oh those would be PERFECT" but I wanted to save the money for the drag brakes.

Did you cut the brackets out? They looked spot welded but I could be wrong.

Up to now I have not cut up the car and I'm going to try and keep it that way as long as I can.

BTW, FWIW I weighed my car in at 3060.

Sorry, didn't see your post.

No, all has been removed. Stereo as well. I have not chopped the harness or removed the sealant but don't plan to either. I removed the passenger seat for another 36lbs (measured) since the last weigh in. I'm about to put in the order for the drag brakes in a day or so and buy a kirkey seat as well. Also stock carpet has been removed and replaced with Ozite.

K-member, A-arms and fiberglass hood are next. I'm hoping that should be enough to get me into the 28XX range without cutting up the car.

I ran a 12.27@109.7 on a 1.681 60' in 7300ft DA of air last weekend.

This weight reduction can be addicting

Good thing you caught yourself at the end there

Car is now at 2920, no cutting. Changes have been kirkey seat and mild steel brackets, fiberglass hood and 6 years of dirt and grime . Pulled some odds and ends and cleaned up some wiring.

Still no K-member or drag brakes! Another 80-100lbs or so.

Door bars are OUT!
I took a short cut and just drilled out the jamb side of the door to get them out quick. I was gonna pull them out the front but I said screw it.
All the info posted was a BIG help, thanks a lot guys.

Did you do it like this ..I used a 1 1/2 hole saw in the lower part of the door then used a body plug like the one under the rear seats fit perfect.

There is not need to cut or drill anything to get them out. They come out the grommet in the front of the door no problem.
