Question Car ran slower?


Tonight i took my stock SS rims off of my 2000 Camaro SS and put my new Bogart 15 inch rims with 26x11x15 inch Mickey Thompson ET Streets on at the track. Last week i ran an 8.50 with my stock rims and tires. I was looking to pick up a couple of tenths with the new combo but the car ran slower with the new tires/wheels. I put the stock tires and the new side by side and the new combo looked to be about an inch or more taller. I guess that took away my gears. I have the stock 3:42 gears now with an automatic trans. Does this have that much impact? Am i correct the the height took away my gears and lowered my ET BY 3-4 TENTHS? I tried reprograming my computer at the track. The Diable uses mm so i put in 275/50/15 is this close? I ran every pressure from 13 pounds up to 24 pounds and i was still way slower than last week. Very disappointing night. I did win one round, the guy bulbed. I guess i will run my stock rears until i can get gears. Any suggestions on programing or thoughts?

They are not good either, slower. 2.13, 2.14, 2.08 this week at 8.89 at 82.29mph or slower. Last week on street tires 1.99, 2.05 8.50 At 84.78mph. Thanks for the reply so quickly.

You will not really see a difference from changing from stockers to drag wheels. You probably saved a total of 40-60lbs. So if you cut a tenth off you lucky. However, running slicks over street tires, you should of dropped some time. I had the same problem with mine. But it turned out that car was bogging some off the line.

25.7" (supposed) 275/40-17's vs 26.1 (advertised) 275/50-15's. This doesn't sound like much but my 275/40-17's actually were 25.2" tall so this would make more of a difference. It sounds to me like a combination of less gear/possibly worse DA made your car noticeably slower. Unless the DA was the same, you cannot directly compare the two nights at the dragstrip though. I would bet that if you tried both tires/rims at the track on the same night the difference in the two would be less that what you just experienced. Add a big converter and the ET streets/Bogarts will run circles around the stock tire/rim combo. You just don't need the extra traction afforded by the MT's at this point but with a converter I'd expect to see your 60' times with the MT's drop down to the 1.7's or 1.6's while staying about the same with the stock tires. Try it once you get a converter. Good luck.

Thanks for the information. I did think about the torque converter. It felt like i could not hold it high enough on the line, but i thought they were spinning off the line not bogging down. Would you go with the converter before 3:73 gears? What pressure would you run in this tire? I tried 13, 16, 22, 24. Nothing seemed to make it better. Could the tranny be slipping? Its not noticable, but could that be a problem? I may have to wait until next season to use the tires until i improve gearing and torque converter. Thanks

still on stock converter? My friend's car dropped noticeable with just a converter swap

Yes i have the stock converter. I thought upgrading the converter would better my times. That is what most people say on this forum. Did you mean his times got better?

my bud had the same problem. he borrowed my m&h racemaster cheeter slicks and with his stock converted they slowed him down. a good stall can knock off .5 from your e.t,get one and you'll be happy.

Thanks, i looked at the Yank site and precision industry site today. What stall do you think, only mods i have so far are Diablo tuner, SLP crank pulley, air lid, Rear end cover/girdle with sythetic. Like i said i was so suprised it ran the 8.50 with 1.9 60 ft on stock SS rims. Then i could not beleive i slowed with light Bogar rims and Et Streets.

On the first question, I would go with the converter before the 3.73 gears. I dropped my ET from the low 8's (1/8th mile obviously) to 7.87 by changing from a PY3400 converter to a PT4000. This was with 3.42 gears in my 12 bolt. You'll see even more difference than that if you've still got the stock converter. I changed to 3.90 gears and ran a 7.81 best at less than a half MPH more. So IMO, converter > gears when looking for time at the track. On what tire pressure to run in the MT Streets, I'd rather defer to what others have done. I run a LOT more pressure in my Hoosier QTP's than anyone else I've seen but my 1.57 60' time (best) tells me they're still working at that high of a pressure. The more pressure you can run in them and still have them hook, the better you'll run. I've seen people post than they ran as little as 8 PSI in them but most are in the 10-12 range. This just seems very low to me. My QTP's are too small for my car at 26 x 9.5 x 16 so maybe that's why I have to run more pressure to keep my car from rolling like a boat on the high seas on the top end. I run 22 PSI cold that ends up being 24 PSI after a good burnout. Take my experience on this as being outside of the norm.

Like I mentioned before, unless the DA was the same you're not comparing apples to apples. I'm in the process of taking 300 pounds off my car, most of which is from the firewall forward. I'm also trying to get a guy almost 200 pounds lighter than my current driver to drive for me. Even with this I don't really expect to beat the 7.48 my car ran last year in 30 degree air with the DA around -1500' until we get some good air back in here in the Fall.

Your average 3200-3800 stall will pick your car up anywhere from .4-.6 tenths on average from what I have seen. Sometimes you can get even more out the converter. I would leave the gears alone and throw a TCI SSF 3500 stall in it and then throw the drag wheels/tires back on it. You will love the improvement with just a converter.

Thanks for the advice. I was just afraid to get a converter first, then change gears next year and have the converter not matched to the correct specs. I guess i will just need testing with whichever i get first at the track. I here diffferent ideas on here on which to do first. Very confusing.

Get a converter ASAP. You cannot take advantage of the tire you have on the stock stall. At this point you have more tire than car and that combined with other slight things like weather conditions is killing your time. I run a TCI 4000/2.8 stall and it dropped my 60' times by four tenths with a good set of tires and some traction. Get a 3200-4000 stall so that you can take advantage of those tires and then you'll see some big changes in your ET.

Thankyou for the reply. So it sounds like the converter will make more of a difference. I just thought those little 3:23 gears were killing me. What needs to be removed to get the tranny down on these cars? It looks like torque arm, exaust (how much of it), drivshaft loop/brace. I'm leaning toward the Yank converter.
