We do a good smokey burnout on the MT DRs and we run 13-15lbs in them.. Thats on a Malibu that runs 6.90s with 1.5 short times and a Mustang that runs 6.80s with 1.5 short times. My friends run anywhere from 13-18lbs on their fbodys that pull 1.5 shortimes as well. We have tried running them at 18+psi and they do not hook for ****.. Maybe its the track, but they definately like the pressure around 15psi from what I can tell..

Well I tried it at 18 and seemed to work OK. 1.67 60 in a full weight car. I was pretty happy. I think with a little work I can get it down in at least the low 1.6 range.

Guys, I'm sure we've all heard the terms "contact patch" an "wrinkle wall". There is a reason for them, it's obvious that the more you air down a tire the larger the contact patch will get. Likewise when you floor the gas, the side wall of the tire wrinkles, so the contact patch gets even larger. Less air to a point is better. I think the MT spec is a 12 lb minimum. For sure dragsters and funny cars air down their their tires WAY down. I'm certain they would more than likely want to go 300+ mph with a fully inflated tire, but they can't because of traction.

bigdsz - you certainly know how to throw around terms but there is one thing you are missing. a very important issue.
its where a tire is designed to operate at. a dragster with a 33" goodyear slick will operate its best at 7.5 psi for SC dragsters. would you run a 17" nitto dr at 7.5psi?
how you are "explaining" contact patch leads me to believe that i should run 7.5 psi in nittos b/c the contact patch will grow. right?
its all about the design of the tire. the radial tire does not operate at its optimum at low psi. i mean, not to be mean but your slow/lazy 60' times show this right?

Below are the tire pressure guidelines off the MT website. I would think if MT thought you would get maximum traction at 22-25 psi for instance, then they would have said that.
Proper use of Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial
Inflation Pressures
On the racetrack DO NOT use starting pressures below 11 psi.
Recommend pressures for:
P295 and larger sizes: 11-14 psi
P275 and smaller sizes: 12-16 psi
On the highway we recommend running 75% of the max psi as notes on the sidewall of the tire.
Burnouts
The tread compound used in the ET Street Radials is designed to heat quickly and does not require a heavy burnout. Continue the burnout until the engine starts to pull down. We do not recommend a dry hop after the burnout.
Bead/Wheel Slippage
Some bead/wheel slippage may result during the course of a 1/4 mile (or 1/8 mile) drag race. This is normal.
Bead-Lock Wheels
For drag strip speeds in excess of 180 mph, Bead-lock wheels are highly recommended.

So to reiterate what I have already stated, from personal experience I have found that 20-22 psi min with a small burmout works best and yeilds me consistent 1.6 60' on a bolt on car.

[QUOTE=Brett H]I have some problems with these statements. First your "contact patch" will actually decrease with lower air pressures on a MT street radial because the tire will begin to "cup" causing only the outside edges to make contact with the ground due to its stiffer sidewall which leads me to the "wrinkle wall".
This is true a RADIALS needs air pressure to support the side walls if not the side wall will give pushing the center of the tire in causing less contact.

ugg forget it guys. this cat is happy telling us whats up with his no hookin 6 speed on radials. just give up and be happy with your bumper draggin 22 psi radial tires.
greg/paula/chevypower/lsqueen - just think how much of the rear bumper cover you could rip off if you REALLY hooked (sarcasim).
and here is a pic. if you dont do this on a small 28" radial, then shut the fug up.
