Default 5500 stall a good match

here is the setup..

2000 Z 28
raceweight 2800 - 3000 lbs (not sure yet)
th350
9in 4.56 gears
Trex
Open Headers

I have noticed the 8 in ATI 5500 stall being very popular...
So i was wanting to give it a try..... thing is everyone around here tells me its overkill.... i try and argue but u know how that goes.......

just wanting some thoughts on this... and exactly which converter Part # is everyone runnning??

thanks
David

If you plan on shifting way up in the RPM band like 7200+ and your making this a strictly race setup then I would say your in the right direction.
Call ATI/TCI/Yank/whoever you perfer and talk your setup over with them. They will do their best to spec the right verter.

Juggernaut had an 8" ATI 5500rpm stall and went 9s with heads/cam NA....i would say that its a good choice. had i not went with a proshifted setup i would have went with a big stall 8" converter

i have close to the same setup as you, and i have a 4000 stall and i think there is some still left on the table with mine.

i usually brake stall it to about 2500 and flash it but, trex doesnt even make power till after that.

a friend of mine has a 5500 he took out of his nova and i am thinking about trying it. i dont know what everyones opinion is on the desktop dyno and desktop drag, but it has nailed 3 of my friends and my car to within a few hundreths. anyway, it says that i should gain about 3-4 tenths with the 5500 over the 4000. dont know.

my only concern is reving it past 7000 with stock rod bolts. what is everyones thoughts on that????ni usually shift about 6800 right now. i dont know maybe i am a *****.

Ive decided to go with a stall between 5200 - 5500 rpms... i was told by a very knowledgable source i could spray up to a 150 with this converter and be safe... the converter would hold and i would not spray through the converter.....
Just double checking with everyone... Is it this converter from ati that everyone is running.. or something different???

The ATI 5500 converter will stall to about 5100(give or take 100) in your car on the transbrake and drop 200 rpms when you launch and 5500-5700 on shifts.
Shifting at 7400 is a waste, I already tried it.

7000 RPM on a 98? Just spend the couple hundred and get some rod bolts from Katech.

Anywhere over 6900rpms will all yeild the same results.
I usually shifted 7000 give or take 50rpms.

If flashed it where would it stall?Who knows, cam only just put it on
the verter and let it creep.Just make sure your suspension/tire is set to handle the hit.

I have no idea what the part number is, but I know they went for 850.00
when I bought it.
