Default Windshield Options?

I wasn't sure where to post this but I figured this may be the best place. People may actually have experience with it in here.

Anyway my windshield has a lot of rock chips from the previous owner who drove on a lot of country roads. I however, do not, so it will never happen again.

With that said I am looking for a replacement but wouldn't it be nice to replace it with something lightweight at the same time? I have lightened up my car a little and this would take it a little further. I know you guys are weight freaks so help me out.

What are my options, what do they cost and how do they hold up compared to the OEM glass? This is a street car, only driven on paved roads and usually only on nice days (no rain unless i'm caught in it).

Thanks.

Lexan makes lightweight windshields made of plexiglass. They're great when they are new but wouldn't use them on a street driven car for 2 reasons. 1 is they are not DOT legal, the other is road dirt/dust overtime will put a haze on it and it's hard to see out of. -Mark

Yeah that is definetely not what I want. I will look up the Speedglass. It caught my interest when my Pontiac Enthusiast mag mentioned it was installed on the 9.6 second INTENSE Grand Prix.

Speedglas seems to be pretty good stuff from what I have seen. But is still is not DOT Legal. Nothing is except real glass. Heck, I dont think I have ever seen a fast car on here having anything but stock glass for the windshield. Most of the guys still keep the power windows.

I am looking for a replacement since mine has a ton of small chips. I just figured it would be nice to do a little weight reduction at the same time.

Alright I found out from their website that its 64lbs saved total to do the entire car. I only want the windshield though so the weight savings would be minimal. It would also be $400-500 for 1/4" thick which does not need the center support. 1/8" and 3/16" does.

I have speedglass, to do it over, I'd keep the OEM stuff.
15# ain't worth it, especially on a street car.

Curious as to why you don't think its worth it?

speed glass is basically the same stuff as lexan, with the exception that it is pre-molded to match the oem glass. got it on my car front and back. good for track cars not good for street. it will not scratch as easy as lexan but it does scratch easier than oem glass. my opinion, dont change out the oem untill the street days are over

Good advice so far. I know this stuff is specially coated lexan to resist scratching. If the whole car would lose 64lbs I figure just the windshield would be somewhere around 20-25lbs. I thought it would be good to look into since I want to replace mine anyway from all the rock chips. I can't even count them, but its bad. I'd venture to say at least 100 in various sizes.

If someone were to look at your car, and not actually be looking for it, would they notice the different glass? Or does it look/feel the same?

It is wavy to look threw, flexs at speed. If anyone has polarized glasses on, it is easy to spot.

The "glass" comes oversized and will need to be cut down to fit it will not install like a typical glass windshield. it will look different, how noticable it is will depend on the quality of the install ovcourse

They make different thicknesses, up to 1/4". How thick is the stock windshield? Can't be that far off. And they say the 1/4" stuff doesn't need bracing because it doesn't flex.

I've got the 3/8", if you go 1/4" you might save 8-10#, still not worth it.
