Any helmet that meets the SNELL M85, M90, M95, SA85, SA90, SA95 or K98 specifications you are good to go with. HJC helmets are economical and provide the minimum specs to be legal. Arai and Griffin helmets are big $$. -Mark

Hmmn..If you have a $100.00 head, then I guess it deserves a $100.00 helmet.
Do your family a favor, and get a GOOD helmet!! They will thank you for it.

gotta agree here, and go with a SA rated helmet, they're tested for multiple hits in the event of a crash, SA95 are no longer allowed at NHRA tracks either because their cert is up this year so its SA00 or higher, almost all helmets from catalogs and stuff however will be SA05 tho

I use a helmet that the snell rating is M2000. I've had it for about 4yrs and found out after I bought it, it was a motorcyle racing helmet. So if a cycle racer uses it I guess it safe enough to use in a car. It did meet both DOT and SMF standards at the time. Although it may be outdated.

Geezer- All helmets that are for sale are required to meet the DOT safety standards while some are tested by SMF and are given a safety rating that exceeds the DOT's. SMF's tests include impact severity (using anvils), postional stability, dynamic retention, penetration, and flame resistance test. As long as the helmet meets or exceeds the SMF and DOT standards it's safe to use regardless of price. -Mark
