Question Calculating shift points...

Some time ago, I read an article in either, GMHT or Chevy Hipo magazine, on the formulaes used to calculate the RPM for shift points.

NE 1 recall this article, or remember which publication it was in??

If you have car craft then you can see those formulas in the newest one in an article about building your first drag car, or just go to the calculator in my sig to help get you close.

I think the best formula is to run it at the track. Track times will tell you where you need to shift at.

With an auto, I was told many years ago by a retired Pro-Stock guy to start at 1000 over peak HP. Clutch cars are depending on # of gears, clutch set up & size.

Track testing will always tell you the sweet spot, before a math formula as said^^.

i have also heard that a 1000rpm past peak power is where you want to shift.

The article went into detailed calculations, to determine the correct point[s]. The calcs were, [they claim], much more accurate, than choosing a particular rpm, and shifting.
I wanted to go back to the article, do the math, then track test, to see if/any improvements were made, either way...

Thanks for the replies.

true but i think alot of us are on stock tachs. an theyre not all that accurate when running the 1/4. i rely on my shift light that i have programed at 6700 to tell me when to shift.

if your a m6 and you can shift fast then shift 200-300 past peak HP. if your an auto, id have it programmed to shift 100-200 past peak HP.

it depends on tranny gearing as well. Performance trends Drag Analyzer has the computer pick the shift points once you put in dyno info etc

I was just asking this on a local board, I wanted to know the shift points for my '00 SS with basic boltons, M6 and a 3.42's. I'm extremely new to the LS1's (just purchased on 1/19/07) and have driven the car a total of 100 miles. I wanted to see if I should be shifting prior to redline or a few hundred short. I'll look at the dyno graph that was provided by the previous owner and see if I can get a starting reference.

Good post, BTW
