Default Light (but quiet) exhaust?

I currently have 3" TD's with an X pipe and Dynomax super turbo mufflers. Its sorta quiet, but I figure its pretty heavy and it really gets in the way of everything. It hits the T/A, and prevents installation of a DS loop. It hits the trailer when I load the car. I hate it. What can I do that won't cost me any power and be as quiet as possible? I'm thinking of some duals but maybe locating the mufflers off to the sides, for ground clearance? I dunno, I just want something better.

what about the guys who dump their exhaust right after a dual muffler setup? i know i've seen a few people running dual exhaust into an x-pipe, which each goes into a muffler and then dumps out. this all happens before the rear axle. wouldn't that be pretty lightweight? i guess it would be somewhat quiet too, depending on what mufflers are used...

Spiral flow off each header or a magnaflow. Spiral flow is lighter.

Thats what I have now.

So with a spiral flow off each collector, I obviously won't have an X pipe. Will that hurt performance at all?

Are people putting mufflers at the collector then running piping back to dump the exhaust? Seems having dump right in the middle of the car would lead to lots of exhaust fumes in the car. This is a street car.

I have spiral flows off each collector. No performance loss whatsoever. Mine is a true streetcar too. Used to be my daily. It's quiet enough to drive wherever i want, no drone. I have never really noticed the fumes, but when i had tips, the fumes were slightly worse.

So you're saying the fumes are better like it is now vs. dumped at the axle? Weird.

Its not hard to drop my exhaust, maybe I could just make a "track" exhaust system with bullets off each collector. Lighter, plus better flow. Might have to try it, all I would need is 2 bullets and 2 turndowns.

Do I need any pipe between the collectors and the mufflers? Or can I just clamp the bullets right to the collectors.

This ******* gonna be loud.......

sorry, i meant when i had turndowns. no piping, the muffler is clamped right to my collector. 3.5 in 3.5 out 4 inch core. No banging or clearance issues and i am lowered a good amount. I also have a BMR xtreme torque arm and it does not interfere with the crossbrace.

And you will be suprised.. it's not that loud. I used to run No muffler/no cats with an open Y pipe. Now that was loud...

Do you have any idea how it would compare to a TSP TD setup with dynomax bullet mufflers?

I would run a same size diamiter pipe as the collector and same or greater lenght peice of tubing before the muffler.

IE: 3 1/2 collector that is 8''. So you run 8''+ of 3/12 piping then to your muffler.

Thats how my setup is, it runs into magnaflow 3 1/2 oval mufflers.

Tony.

I had thought about doing this with my new SI setup but am worried about losing power over the 3" true duals I have now. My cam only 00 z28 had stepped headers with 3.5" collector, a 3.5"-3" reducer, 3in/3out Flo Pro Twister muffler, then turndowns. The car ran 10.80s all day long on a MT drag radial & 3275 raceweight. Here is a pic & video of it:

Alright, I'm gonna order some spiral flows and turndowns now.

One question: I don't want to permanently attatch the mufflers to the headers (so I can swap to my other TD setup if need be), so how should I attatch the mufflers? My headers are 3", so the 3" spiral flows should slide right on. Would a band clamp work? I don't think a U-clamp would be smart, those tend to bend the pipes up pretty bad.

V bands require special ends on the piping though don't they?

I got band clamps, hope my **** don't fall off on launch!

BTW, do you run your exhaust the same way at the track.

Here is a little hint, put a small sheetmetal screw (#8 x 1/2 or something) through both pipes under the band clamp and they will never blow off. The band clamp will form right around the screw. Thats if the pipes overlap of course My muffler stays on like that on 1.25 60 foots and I can still pull the entire exhaust apart in 5 minutes.

Yup, or i just take the muffler off and put pipe extensions on.
Here's the reason why i no longer run band clamps:

Hope it works...

Thanks guys!

KP, I had actually planned to do that already, but I was going to go through the clamp too. Your idea sounds better, and it'll keep the head of the screw from getting buggered up.

I would have actually lightened the car up had I not just installed the Spohn drag bar. Damnit!

Main thing is the band clamp keeps the screw from falling out Use a stainless screw also or it will rust quick and the head will snap off..

Spohn sway bar weighs a ton, I know I have one, but it works and the weight is in a good place.
