Why larger diameter tires?

I'm curious guys.
Why are some of you running 28-30" dia. slicks at the track?
It seems like that's adding a lot of rotating mass without any obvious advantage.
I mean, if I wanted more miles / rotation, I'd use a different set of gears right?
Taller sidewalls maybe?
Someone enlighten me.

some people use them because they are running large gears to match their stall and cam and they are needed to go through the traps at the appropriate rpm.
others use them as a band-aid for a poorly set up suspension, the taller tire is easier to hook and more consistent
