Default Why larger diameter tires?

I'm curious guys.
Why are some of you running 28-30" dia. slicks at the track?
It seems like that's adding a lot of rotating mass without any obvious advantage.

I mean, if I wanted more miles / rotation, I'd use a different set of gears right?
Taller sidewalls maybe?

Someone enlighten me.

Most the time they run a deep gear 4.30s, 4.56, 4.88, etc so they run a taller tire so they don't run out of RPM before the end of the 1/4 mile.

some people use them because they are running large gears to match their stall and cam and they are needed to go through the traps at the appropriate rpm.

others use them as a band-aid for a poorly set up suspension, the taller tire is easier to hook and more consistent

I run the 28" tire for 2 main reasons... like brandon said, the larger tire has more contact on the ground, and the more sidewall takes a little more shock from the clutch dump.
