Default Is it harmful to run open headers?

Is it better to have a exhaust sys. or can you actually run better with open headers. I wasn't sure because of a back pressure issue. What do you guys think?

back pressure is a non issue. Scavenging!!! You will lose a little low end torque and gain high rpm horsepower. If you want some of that torque back, get some 12-18 inch extensions with turndowns. You could have problems with your o2 sensors screwing up your A/F ratio due to them not heating up properly if you just run open headers. (too close to open air)

Well the car did pretty good. It ran a 7.2s@93.7mph open headers. My TD's came off when loading the car on the trailer. Needed to get to the track and didn't bother putting them on.

We all use open headers, some of the milder guys run an extension collector.

Data recorder switch, even when we're not racing, we always use it, we actually caught an exhaust spring going weak one time, just out scuffing up new tires.

Thanks for watching, hope you didn't fall asleep.

Just duct the hot exhaust gases away from your floorboards. (turndowns, or side exit)
Catching fire is not fun. Trust me ... been there, done that, lost the tshirt.

Im thinking of running open headers as well. My concern is the O2s and I also have a wideband that I would like to use. I guess you could use small extensions or sides and put a spot for the wideband there. How far from open air is good for the sensors in general?

Also it depends on if you get reversion and gives false 02 readings. On my MAC's, when I tried open headers, I put a bolt-on 6" extension on them to keep from false readings. However, I personally prefer the tone of my custom-length mufflers on vs. open headers...we saw no horsepower loss with them and they are only 2.5" versions.

This weekend, weather permitting, I'll be trying a different header combo and running open only until my new mufflers come in. Good luck. Dave

Just run a bullet-style muffler off the collector. It'll flow just as well, give you the length you need, and quiet the thing down a little!

I run Edelbrock stepped LT's/3.5" Moroso spirals/flowmaster turndowns turned out to the side.

It's a very basic/clean setup IMO
