Default 12v vs 16v systems

When would you switch from a 12volt to a 16 volt system? I like the idea of the 16 volt just trying to justify the cost difference of the battery/alternator. I need to buy a pair of either one no matter which way I go.

No matter what on a fuel injected car I run an alternator for 12 volt or 16. The 16 is the **** though.

.

We switched to 16 Volts because it's stronger and you will start easier with less than a full charge, especially when weather or oil downs is making us hot lap rounds. I'm a big fan of more power to the fuel pump, N2O & starter the better. If starting a new project it would be the way to go, no second thoughts. If I had a 12 Volt system that works fine I probably wouldn't buy a new battery, alt & charger just to have 16 Volt set up. Like Mad Man mentioned, everyone I know says an alt is a must have with all the modern stuff that injected cars have, and then you can run one battery.

LS1 Edit will freak out if you put a 16v battery to it.

A 16 volt system will be trouble free if you charge the battery between rounds.

16 volt systems are bad for 12 volt bulbs...Especially the little one like tach and marker lights...

But the car loves it...

Which alternator are you guys using? Is a 16volt to 12 volt step down box really necessary? How fast will it burn the head lights out?

PowerMaster makes a 16v to 12v step down box you can use to run everything that will burn up with a 16v battery.

isnt there a battery that has 2 posts on it? one for 16v and one for 12v...
also, if im not mistaken, the f.a.s.t. systems will handle up to 18v or so without going nuts about it.

running a 16v battery without an alternator, the lights and stuff will be seeing around 14-15v or so. no biggie there, thats just a tad more than they would see with a 12v alternator charging at 13.8.

Can you run a 12 volt alternator with a 16 volt battery to keep the voltage under 18?

I don't need any specific bolt pattern, just a small one wire alternator.

I have a Turbostart step up box to run a 12 volt alternator with a 16v battery. I have a three post battery also for 12volt stuff.

.

It says very loudly & clearly in the 16V paperwork, do NOT use with a 12V alt.

The 3 post bat is the best for a car with stuff that will not handle the 16V.
You won't have to worry about add on box's going bad on you.

Same here.

I was having problems with the BS3 and the 12volt with a 13.5:1 CR motor. On start up it was popping back through the intake and the voltage was under 10volts on start up. I talked with Madman and he said that the 16v would fix it. Sure enough it did. Starts up perfect everytime with no issues.

Ok, I just got my alternator from autofab(east coast electronics), my old pulley slipped right on so now all I have to do is build the mounts. Now I just got to decide which 16 volt battery I should go with?
