Got slicks... what should I expect?
Hey guys,
The drag racer in me is maturing a little bit. It's been a couple years with drag radials, and finally the slicks have arrived. The car is an M6 with a Dana, CF driveshaft, and a Textralia clutch. She's only putting down 400RWHP and 365RWTQ, so the driveline should be decently stout.
How should I launch the car? If I do a 6500RPM clutch dump, can I expect a controlled spin of the tires to take the place of the clutch slip that I'm used to? Or, will they dead hook causing the engine to bog (or tranny to explode)? I have no concept of what kind of hookage I'm going to be getting.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well, a blower is in my future, so hopefully I won't have to use the spray to keep it from bogging when the time comes.
What do you guys usually experince on motor when simply revving it up and dropping the clutch on slicks? Do you typically bog, or can 400ish RWHP make her go with enough RPMs? And do you usually get a few revolutions of spin, or is it usually a dead hook situation?
Whatever the case, my first attempt will be a 6500RPM clutch dump... just because it's the right thing to do.

If it dead hooks and bogs the motor add more psi to the tires, or more rpm. My first time out with the 6 speed and ET streets I started with 16.5 psi and 6200-6400rpm launch. I found that it slightly bogged the motor so I added PSI until the bog went away. I run as much PSI in the tires as the track allows me to get away with.

I don't care what other people tell you, if you do a 6500rpm dump launch look out you are going to break something. Me, I did and would again start off at 5000-5500. Dropping the clutch at 5500 got me numerous 1.4 60's and some very good times (on nitrous and N/A), before I got sick of transmission problems and switched to the TH-400.

My rear is a Dana S60, so that'll hold up. The driveshaft is CF, so that should be alright (for 400 HP, anyway). The wheel studs are whatever comes with the Dana. Stock size, but hopefully strong (no idea, really). The tranny is bone stock. The Textralia should hold.

make sure you drive with the slicks on for a while at a lower PSI to break in the side wall. i do this as well with my DRs it really does help.
be carefull SLICKS are a way diffrent animal on the top end they want to wiggle all over and feel like they are gonna slid right out from under ya.
they do hook diffrent then a DR will. i agree start out with a high PSI 17 what ever and start at 5500 work from there. when you get it right youll love it. and your tranny will hold mine has held a ton now clutches on the other hand i have had plenty.

If I was trying for quickest et, I would run tall skinny slicks that grow alot and a lot of gear. I think people are too worried about shifting into 5th at the end but it doesnt matter. The most important part of the run is the first 60ft.

That's why I got the 28" tires. I figured it would hurt my launch a bit, but now I don't have to worry about running out of gear. I'm right up to 6800-6900 at the traps in fourth in the 1/4 and almost the exact same in third in the 1/8.
I was hoping for a 27" tire, but the only ones I found were either not slicks or were for 8" wheels.
