Default Question about gearing for 1/4

Right now I cross the traps at 6100-6200 with 3.73's. What gear would get me there at around 6700-6800? I'm looking for max et, but I don't want to go over 7-7100 rpm's due to the factory computer. Help me pick my next gear.

try some 3.90...maybe 4.10 and wire up a manual lockup switch, hit it about 6400 or so in 3rd and it will help pull you through the traps...

If you're now turning 6200 at a given speed with the 3.73's, 4.10's will have you turning 6815 at the same speed assuming you're either a M6 car or are locking up your converter if you're an A4.

Just curious, what's your power curve looking like. I'm getting ready to switch gears as well and am probably settling on 4.30's because of my engine making max power up around 6800. I'd really like 4.56's but I'm afraid I might run out of gear just before the traps. I'm scared of turning much more than 7000 RPM.

7100/6200=X/3.73

X= 4.27

6800/6200=Y/3.73

Y= 4.09

I would go with 4.10 or 4.11 depending on your options.

4.10/3.73=Z/6200

Z=6815

I'm not sure what my power curve looks like, I've yet to get on the dyno with my new motor.

Thanks man, I have a Moser 12 bolt with a series 3 carrier. Will I have to swap to a series 4 carrier?

You should use a 4 series carrier per Strange Engineering. They do make a kit for a 3 series carrier. If your convertor doesn't lock up you may see higher RPMs. I'm not an expert on autos, but I'm pretty sure you won't go over 7000 RPMs.

Get your car to the dyno and check out your power curve before making a final decision on which gear to go with. 4.10's are probably the best choice but why chance it?

That's true. I'll make my decision after my dyno tune.

here is a quick calculation

RPM / rear gear / tranny ratio(omit of 1:1) / 336 * tire size = SPEED
6700/3.89/1/336*27=138.404 MPH

or if you know you MPH you wanna hit
rear gears*tranny*speed/tire size*336=RPM
3.89*140/27*336=6777.24 RPM

hope this helps ya its how i picked my 3.89s and my 27in slicks for my 6900RPM red line

Another vote for 3.90. As you pick up more power later, you may find yourself running out of gear w/ the 4.10.

jeez, if you need to buy a carrier and everything, why not just spend that money to get another 50hp somehow. Should be around 65-6600 then, and alot faster.
An old guy told me once, if you need bigger gears, you just aint got enough motor. **** im switching to 3.08's from my 3.42's this winter
