should i go th350 or glide???
hey all.....
i've wanted to go auto with this car from the beginning and i'm trying to get my ducks in a row for the coming months when it's cold and the car is down. yes, it's a little early still, but please humor me!
car and description is below in sig. it should be around 2900lbs with me. intended use is light to light, some track, and local cruising.
not sure of gearing yet, (3.73 or 3.90) but i'm looking at having 2 sets of rear tires, 28" street & 26" track. (small overdrive effect with the taller street tires)
n/a for now but i want to throw a 100-150 shot at it eventually depending on what it takes to get a 9 sec slip.
so, should i go for a th350 for the larger more useful 1st gear on the street or a glide for more consistancy? either way, i'll be running a T-brake. not sure what a glide is like driving around.
thanks and please feel free to comment why, in fact i encourage it so long as you're to the point with some basis to your reasons.

If using a transbrake and using it often, go either TH400 for 3-speed or glide for 2-speed. Glides are nice if you are are planning an agressive set-up as they have a less-violent launch usually versus the 3-speed (1st gear ratio), so I'd vote glide from your 2 choices.

just to make it clear, the primary use of the vehicle will be street, and only minimal track visits, like 1-2 times/year is all. i spoke to the shop that will be building the trans and he highly recommends the th350 especially since the brake will have minimal use. he said if it were a bracket car, he would 100% go with a glide but does not suggest much street use with a glide.
any other thoughts?

Second gear is still 1:1 with a glide like 3rd is on an A3 or A4, and the right TC it would be alright on the street.
Nothing wrong with a TH-350/400 either, it will probably hit harder off the line and would be a good street/track trans, and if you do alot of freeway cruising the 4l80e would be a better choice for sure with the OD.
I will have a nice Neal Chance TC for sale real soon, made for the LS1/TH400 if intersted .

4l80 is not an option, thanks for the input though. my car is a carb application so no elec trans for me. the th350 would 100% leave harder and from what i'm told will not heat up the trans quite as much all else being equal like gearing & converter choice because the car accelerates quicker & easier.
the more i talk about it the more i'm leaning towards the th350. again, if this was more of a track car i wouldn't even consider anything but a glide.

yea, i'm not 100% on the gear yet becuase i don't know what it'll run, but i know i won't be running the current 4.56 if i run 26" tires. however, if i minitub the car and stuff a 29.5" tire, then i could probably stay with them, but i don't forsee going with a tire that BIG!.
not sure what you mean by the converter selection not being as important with an auto though?

A steeper first gear in the PG is going to require a larger stall converter to get the same tq multiplication, with a Th400 you get a lower gear and a smaller converter.

ok, i get what you mean now. contrary to the poll, which i'm not sure how many who voted p/g read that there wont be much track time, i'm leaning hard towards a well built th350. i'd love to get some wheels up action if i can get it to hook.

You have a 4-link and slicks in a light car.

well, i've got stock rear springs, air bags vs anti-roll bar, and poly bushings in both aftermarket upper & lower control arms. it's not exactly drag oriented, so i'm not getting my hopes up. that and isn't a lighter car harder to hook? my weight dist if i remember correctly when the car was 2850 lbs was like 54%/46% front/rear, not sure with me in it what it comes to. i've since removed about 100lbs off the nose which would make it roughly 52/48 now without me.

I kinda mistook your original post when you said light to light and some track, plus the Pic in your Sig looked totally track biased . For your mostly street use, TH350/400 might be a better choice. For me, If I didn't already have a sweet Th400, I would go glide even if I did use it mostly for street on my new setup.

Th350 at your power level.
There's this guy at the local track, He always beats me by a tenth or so.
I've got a th350 with a t brake, he's got a glide.
I 60' in the 1.3's ( 1.32 being my best)
He 60' in the low 1.5's, if he's lucky he may break into the high 1.4's from time to time.
He mpher's around 134
I mpher 129 at best.
My point being, a glide for his set up is way overkill imo and just kills his 60'.
He's running 29.5" tires but ther're radial slicks w/ 4:56 gears.
If he ran a th350, he should easily be able to 60' in the low 1.3's- high 1.2's and he'd be high 9's all day with the right suspension set up.
