Default 1970 Chevelle

Hey,
I'm thinking about buying me a 1970 Chevelle SS with the a LS5 454. With street slicks on it what kind of 0-60 and 1/4 mile should I expect to get. Also with a bigger carb, intake, headers, saved heads, and headers what kind of time would it have. Also how much underpowered are the 71,71 and what would it take to give them the same power as the 70. I want the quickest, streetable car I can get. Thanks

This board is for 98 or newer f bodies and 97 or newer corvettes. I see where you are getting the LS1 and LS5 mixed up. Also the 70 SS chevelle 454 a LS6 motor.

Nice ride.

Also the 70 SS chevelle 454 a LS6 motor.
There was also an LS5 in '70 I think...as well as the ultra hi po dealer/parts counter LS7 option.
The '71s did see a power drop (lower compression, more smog equipment etc.) across the board and I think the LS6 was gone leaving the LS5 as the only 454 option.
Was the 396 (aka: 402) still available after '70? I think it was.

Stock a LS5 runs high 13's. The LS6 454 is a much stronger engine. It has rectangular port heads, solid lifter cam and aluminum intake.

The LS5 has good potential. With headers, intake and cam it can be capable of 11's. Streetability is kinda of an oxymoron with a big block. Its no big deal making it a daily driver if you dont mind 6mpg.

THe 71 and 72 are pretty much the same engine except they have less compression. Thats why they are down on power.

If its an original car and you have the a lot of money, you could replace the engine with a radical crate motor and have a super fast ride. THen if you ever need to sell it, you can put the original engine back in and still retain the value.

Chevelles are sweet cars. Just a lil heavy though.

Sorry I didnt realise this board wasnt open to any drag racing question. In 1970 They offered the ls5 as the standard 454 with only 69 ls6's I think.?.? I cant afford one with the ls6 in it. I dont know if I want to buy one with the ls5 454 and do some top-end work on it or buy a SS body-frame and put me a drag engine in it. What im going for is high 6sec. 1/8 mile and 10 to 11sec. 1/4. Does anybody know a muscle car board or somewere else I can go?

I think you could probably save alot buying a Chevelle frame and putting your choice of motor in there. Most 454 SS's with the original engine is a collector's car and you'll pay a premium because of that. No reason to pay a collector's cost for a car you want to make a drag car out of. BTW IIRC, the LS5 is actually more rare (despite its lower power) than the LS6 in '70. So I'm not sure how much cheaper it would be to get an LS5 car.

I think that you would run between high 1.5s to low 1.7 60 fts and you would most likely run in the mid to hight 12's.

Chevelles are very heavy Hot Rods.

I have a 1970 Chevelle that I won the SS/DA Fram Super National back in 1991. What a sweet Hot Rod. She was a tubbed Super Stocker. I ran low 10s back in SS/DA trim.(3850 lbs) She now sit in a garage just waiting on me to finish her in Super Gas trim.
