1970 Chevelle
I'm thinking about buying me a 1970 Chevelle SS with the a LS5 454. With street slicks on it what kind of 0-60 and 1/4 mile should I expect to get. Also with a bigger carb, intake, headers, saved heads, and headers what kind of time would it have. Also how much underpowered are the 71,71 and what would it take to give them the same power as the 70. I want the quickest, streetable car I can get. Thanks
The '71s did see a power drop (lower compression, more smog equipment etc.) across the board and I think the LS6 was gone leaving the LS5 as the only 454 option.
Was the 396 (aka: 402) still available after '70? I think it was.
The LS5 has good potential. With headers, intake and cam it can be capable of 11's. Streetability is kinda of an oxymoron with a big block. Its no big deal making it a daily driver if you dont mind 6mpg.
THe 71 and 72 are pretty much the same engine except they have less compression. Thats why they are down on power.
If its an original car and you have the a lot of money, you could replace the engine with a radical crate motor and have a super fast ride. THen if you ever need to sell it, you can put the original engine back in and still retain the value.
Chevelles are sweet cars. Just a lil heavy though.

Chevelles are very heavy Hot Rods.

I have a 1970 Chevelle that I won the SS/DA Fram Super National back in 1991. What a sweet Hot Rod. She was a tubbed Super Stocker. I ran low 10s back in SS/DA trim.(3850 lbs) She now sit in a garage just waiting on me to finish her in Super Gas trim.
