How are you launching and how fast?
How are you launching and how fast? Curious how everybodys launching? 2 step? Tranny brake? foot brake? anyting else? And what type of transmission are you running and how fast are you running the the 1/4?
The purpose of this thread: I"m trying to decide on what transmission to go with, th400, powerglide, 4L80E? My combo is a 408ci, tfs heads, fast 90/90 and a good bit of spray 200-250shot. The car is street driven on nice days, and driven to the track which is about 30miles from my house so overdrive would be nice but not necessary.

I'd run a TH400, if you plan on going with more power down the road I would run a P/G.
I've run a th350, 700r4, th400, t-5 and t-56.
I ran a 3 step with the th400 it also had a transbrake.
My motor revved to 4500 on the transbrake and I let using a 250 shot right off the transbrake.
9.30's low 1.3's

If you are wanting to go with a transbrake, go TH400 or powerglide. The glide loses less power and weighs less than the TH400, but only 2 gears vs. 3 and first gear is 2.4 something in the TH400 versus 1.7-1.8 in the glide. A lot of higher hp cars run glides due to easier launches without the "shock" a 3-speed can sometimes have.
I've run a TH350 and currently have a TH400 in my Nova. I swapped for the transbrake, and boy is it fun (although I still footbrake a lot more). 3800 stall 10" converter, 3.73 gears in a 3500 lb street car and she goes 1.51 60 foot when all is right.

im currently streaching the limits of a turbo 350, leaving on o t-brake at 4500 on the 3 step, flashing to 5300 or so on the bottle (225 shot, progressive controller @900 hp) stating on 20 % hiting 1.28 60 ft, on the rear wneels carries the fronts for @100 ft on a good pass, should go low 9.0's with new fuel pump might hit 8's

A stock th400 ratio 1st gear is 2.48, glide is 1.78. Glide will require more power or stall to run. My friend runs a 6000 stall in his glide car, his motor revs to 8200 though.
OK ya, a glide is out of the question due to what chris said and because our cars arent exactly light, need some gearing to get it rollin'. I think the th400 is the way to go. I ran one b4 and it pulled the stock 60lb wheel and tire combo 6 or so inches off the ground with a carb'd motor. I guess stick with what works. Although a 4L80e with OD would be nicer on the street, i'm just leary about it being computer controlled, still alittle intimidated by it all.
I've used 2 steps and trans brakes b4 as well, they do rock, but with spray might be abit much, dragging the bumper is cool a couple times but can be expensive haha. the Trans brake might be nice to have even if i dont use it. How about the manual valve body, anybody use this or no??
Now also what about gearing? What are you guys with nitrous running for gears?

I ran a 250 shot on 33x16.5S M/T drag tires, 4.86 gear with a TH400 4,500 stall, if you tune the chassis right it will leave without putting it on the bumper, my wheelbase was 114.5" and the first time after I tuned my 4 link and left off the t-brake, slammed my *** into the seat and dropped my n20 button, still saw a whole lot of sky and thought to myself (wow I must be doing a big wheelie) LOL went 1.30 in the 60 ft with about 1/4 sec on the n20.

the paddle shift feature works now on the tci trans computer, for the 4l80e, cool feature. a manual v\b on the street can be a pain depending on the shifter, some are harder to down shift than others, most manual v/b's also loose the engine brakeing in 2nd,and 1st, not that that really matters, and the trans brake itself isnt what will make a car go on the bumper. the 4l80 is big and heavy and takes alot of hp to motivate, converter choices are opening up though, thats the downfalls to that, and as far as rear gear that depends on several things, tire size rpm limit, desired speed , realistic speed lol with a 28 inch tall slick, at 145 and a 4.11 gear i trap at @7300 thats with 3 to 400 rpm slip in the converter which is really good like 5 % at the most, so without more info recommending a gear is just a guess. there are some lightweight internals 400's out there , kilgore transmissions i think makes them, on a car like ours (small displacement, compared to a 572 for example, and too heavy for a glide) we cant afford to waste h/p turning the trans you can get a 2.75 first gear for a 400 but i dont think its needed untill you get to 4k , but then who wants to race a freakin locomotive? i really have no explination how a th350 is still together, but im going to use it till it pukes
