Default cut in 9" moser axle

I had bearinngs pressed and removed and new bearings pressed back on by the local machine shop.. After going to pick them up, there was a grinder cut on the axle and Im not happy...Its near the flange under the collar that holds the bearings on, maybe 1/16"...is cutting the collars the right way to get them off? am i liable for the damage?

is it a common way yes, is it right..well...thats up for discussion. I would bring that up with the owner of the machine shop, nicely, and see where it goes, this would be tough to fight in court though, you cant prove that the axles were fine before, so its your word against theirs, but maybe the shop will work with you, not being an a$$ will help you. Also contact moser and see if they can tell you if it will weaken the axle, it does create a stress riser, but that shouldnt weaken it that much, but i wouldnt want to find out the hard way. hope you get a satisfactory response

I've yet to find a way to press them off with the factory backing plate on. the plate gets in the way so you can't press...

aftermarket backing plate...no problem

.

Be calm, as said. I would be pissed, any stress point is unacceptable.

A better way to remove the retainer is to drill into it half way or a little more and then strike it with a cold roll chisle across the point where you drilled it. Ater a couple of blows it will usually crack at the spot it was drilled and slide off. Of course, if you're careless you can drill too far and hit the axle just like your machine shop did with the grinder. Good luck to you at the machine shop.

they have my axles and the first set of bearings i paid to have installed...the 2nd set of new bearings have been put on the axles, and the new crush collars are half the width of the old ones

the machine shop wants me to pick up the axles, and they said they will draw a written agreement that IF the axle breaks in the spot where the cut is, they will replace the axle...should this be taken care of now or later?

wow... Yeah well too bad that axle break could put you in the hospital... Sounds like a very stupid agreement to me! They're obviously concerned with the bottom line and not with your safety. Not the type of shop I'd be interested in dealing with. Does this shop by chance build stock cars lol?

ive seen nothing but great things from the shop...im going there tomorrow to speak with the owner about things, and see what i can do for him...i have dated reciepts when i purchased the axles from anothing company. i have a receipt when i had the bearings pressed on from these guys, they are about month apart?...i guess ill have to spray some windex on the cut to help the resale value.

You guys are paranoid lol. If the cut isnt in the radius where the flange and axle meet is i wouldnt lose sleep over it, the splines are nothing but 'cuts' and thats the biggest load point right there..

Its very common to use a cutoff wheel and then a chisel to split the bearings, its also common to go a little deeper than you should or slip and cut into the machined surface. Only thing is if the cut goes too far towards the inside the moser rears use an extra seal inside the housing to keep oil in, if the cut is where the seal rides then it has a chance if leaking. But I know guys that dont use the inner seal and have no problems so..

But its your car and your axle, if it bothers you that much send the axle to Moser and see what they say. If they give it a thumbs up then thats that, if the say you need a new axle try to get the machine to pay for it. The machine shop isnt going to do anything because people on an internet message board say something, but may if Moser does..
