I don't disagree that Ram Air works but I think people's assumptions may be wrong on what's actually going on. Ram air is simple pulling cooler air outside the engine bay into the motor. The air is still going into the motor at the same velocity. THe motor is an air pump. Its only gonna suck (in N/A state) as much air as it needs. Especially at our speeds. Now traveling 250mph I'm sure it would have some effect in increasing cylinder pressure.
the SS hood scoop is in a horrible spot for it to work well while the WS6/Firehawk hood scoops are in a better but still not optimal spot.

Nice write up.
I've always been a fan of Ram Air mods and they do work.
Motor will only take in the air it needs yes but with a good ram air set up u create a high pressure condition in the airbox and plenum so the motor is not "wanting" for air and we all know that pressurized air, even if it's only a little, makes more power.

I remember reading an article eons ago about testing they did on corvettes and chevelles in the 60's using their version of "ram air" called cowl induction. This used the high pressure area created at the base of the windshield and cowl area. Engineers and I believe the legendary Zora Arkus Duntov ran a vette at a test track with and without the cowl induction they developed. I don't remember the track or the conditions but I believe they were able to cut almost ten seconds off of the lap times with just the addition to the cowl induction. That must've been an eye opener. And that is where the cowl induction hoods with flappers made their way onto factory cars such as my once beloved 70' Chevelle SS 396 (really a 509)... hence the nickname of trik396... haha
