Coolant Cross-over Return Needed?

Default Coolant Cross-over Return Needed?
I have a racing radiator that doesn't have a bung in it for the coolant return that comes out of the heads, through the TB, and to the radiator. Is this line actually needed? I'm not sure if it's really needed for cooling or not.

Help!

Its not needed for cooling exactly but its needed to purge the air out of the engine (they are at the highest point in the cooling system), having air trapped at the top of the heads could cause hot spots/detonation. I doubt its really needed, especially in a drag car, but you may have trouble getting all the air out..

If it were me I would have a bung welded in the radiator similar to stock and hook it up..

I appreciate the help. I didn't really want to weld on the radiator, but if I need to I will.

Anybody else run without it by chance?

If your upper rad hose is higher than the heads you can put the line into that. You just need to clear air for it to function.

We use a 1 1/2 inch chunk of aluminum tube in our dyno with a 5/16 little barb on it. It just goes inline with hose clamps.

i havent ever looked at mine, but i know a lot of guys tap into the top of the factory waterpump.
you may be able to do it with the electric pump.

I think my top radiator hose is the same height as the head, so Im not sure if it will work or not. It would be nice to tap into the waterpump and not have to route lines.

seen it done a bunch i dont reccomend it but you can put a small barb in the radiator if yours is metal it might work out fine...

Like said above if your hose is high enough you can tap it there or I think you can even run it to some sort of catch can or overflow tank.

yes it does circulate....DO NOT run it to an overflow.

since i dont have heat in my car i made a fitting coming out of one of the ports on my electric water pump and ran the hose down to there
