How bad is stock suspension?

Default How bad is stock suspension?

Ok I need to get this car ready to race by July. Problem is I'm way over budget right now So suspension mods are on hold for now.

So what do I absolutley need to install on this car?

I was thinking subframe connectors and a drag bar at the least.

99 Camaro SS
408ci
Th-400 with t-brake
Spohn Torque arm
Strange 12 bolt with 4:10s
325/50/15 MT radial
6 pt cage
3000-3200 raceweight

I would add shocks as well for a BARE minimum.

since your on a tight budget, you might consider v6 front shocks/springs and a good set of control arms to minimize wheel hop. or vice versa you could get poly bushings for your control arms and pan hard and box them all in, and then get you a set of front adjustable coil overs.

I would say for the rear suspension at a minimum you need to relocate the lower control arms.

I am running:
stock LCAs w/poly bushings
Stock panhard bar
Stock torque arm w/poly bushing)(Relocated to the crossmember)
Stock rear springs
Relocation brackets (Home made)

I cut 1.4X 60' times and run 9.9XX...

I believe the rear suspension has poly bushings already.

I just need to have the car ready to race July 25,26. After that I'll do QA1s, k member, etc.


Ryan your car seems to have no problem getting it done. Gives me hope.

like others said, the important issues are LCA and drag sway bar. many many peopel have gone 1.49 60' or better on bone stock suspension (factory). itsjust not consistent when the tq arm and the lcas flex

i go 1.45 with subframes and rear sway bar and do it very consistantly with a 28 inch slick.... 4400, 4.10 and 440 rwhp.... everything else stock. so at the least do the sway bar

if you ever take the rear LCA's off, you will see how flimsy they can be even when not under load.

Flimsy twisting is not a problem, under compresion they don't flex at all.

They twist for a reason...

tq arm is gonna break, better replace that too while you're at it.


You didn't think you were gonna get the car done cheap were ya LOL, building a solid 10 second n/a car from a stock car, and doing a good motor/trans in the process is a solid 20+ grand. Ask me how I know.

I have the Spohn Torque arm.

Problem I had is my OT died and that put a big hurting on my mod money. I'm used to working 60 hours a week now I am down to 45

My goal was to pay everything I buy for this car in cash. So far I am holding myself to that, I did not want to owe any debt on modding the car. Been there done that. But I also wanted the car done right the first time.
