Default Some track advice for a noob : )

I am taking my 98 SS to the track for the first time since my mods have been on later this week. My mods include: Lid, LT's, full exhaust, stock 3.23's, and a Yank SS3600 that was just installed.

I am wondering how best to launch the car? I am new to stalled autos. Its an 1/8th mile track and I will be running some 245 Nittos(I know there not great) on a 16in. stock TA wheel in the back. I also have some 295 BFG G-sports on my 17 stock ZR1 rear wheels. Which tire would be better, and what RPM should I launch at? Thanks in advance.

Just load it up to about 1200-1500 rpms or whatever your brakes will hold. I would try the 295 BFG's. Make sure to pull around the waterbox and just do a small burnout to clean them off and you should be cutting decent 60' times.

I always pulled my best times just stabbing the gas off of idle. Pulled a 1.59 60 ft w/ bolt-ons, SY3500, 3.73's, DR's, full weight, and stock suspension. I tried different methods, but always came back to this.

If you have full size radials in front, pull around the water. I would back up the water, get the drag radials a little weight, and do a burnout just in front of the water box. I'd have the tires at 22 psi cold. Reason I suggest a little water is that then the burnout is a bit more forgiving to a factory posi. don't power out of the burnout. Subsequent burnouts should be shorter. If you don't get any smoke off the first burnout you probably did not heat the tires enough.

After you stage try two footing it, and just stab the gas. If you spin stay in it and there is your first pass. If you spin, you might not be able to come out real hard. If you don't spin, hopefully you cut a 1.8 or better. Now come around after cooling off the car with the hood up. Try footbraking 400 rpms higher than where you launched the first time. See what that does. Then try another 200-400 rpms until you find out what the converter likes. My old experience is that Yanks like being stalled up. Keeping stalling it up higher assuming you get good results. You'll know you stalled it up too high when the car just starts moving.

Keep track of what's going on. Don't drop the tire pressure to more than 22 psi cold, dropping them a lot won't help that much. They'll be 24-25psi after your burnout.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
