Default Little help on shift points for my setup

I keep finding conflicting info and I'm not sure what to think. My mods are in my sig and my car currently shifts right around 6100 and drops to 4600 at WOT in every gear. I understand that you want your RPMs after a shift to land at or near peak tq but without having a dyno sheet on my car I don't know where to begin. I see some people talking about shifting around 6500-6800 while others are shifting around 5500 and claiming that works best.

Thanks in advance!

i don't think you need to go much higher with a stock cam.

I'd try between 5500-6100 on motor like yours. See what works best and if possible check the rpm drop for each gear, I would think the 1-2 should would be the biggest change.

Thanks guys. After looking at some stock or near stock dyno graphs it looks like peak hp starts dropping off after 5600 and tq is fairly constant from 3800-4600. Knowing that, I think my shift points are too high, I am staying in it so long that hp is decreasing and landing still in the same tq values that I would be at shifting 500 rpms sooner. I'm gonna try lowering my shift points to 5600-5700 and see if I pick up some et.

A tuned stock LS1 should not loose more than a couple rwhp between 5600 & 6000. You dont want to shift at the hp peak, always wind past it. Remember, the '98 factory tach is a couple hundred fast (same as the LT1s), unlike the '99/'02 LS1 in which the factory tach lags behind the engine. Log with a scan tool or use an aftermarket tach to verify your shift points. Many 3 speed cars like 1>2 to be "short shifted" a little.

You might see if you can contact John D. Brown, he used to frequent this place. He went something like 11.55 with his '01 or '02 TA that had never had the valve covers off. You need to pick his brain if you can find him. I have had several customers in the elevens with stock, never opened engines, but John is the fastest one I can remember.

Shift points need to be based off of 2 things. Max rpm and peak rpm. You need to find out what the max rpm you can to spin the motor and what rpm you make peak hp at. Depending on the tranny ratios your shift points will vary from one gear to another.

A good rule of thumb is that you want to shift around 500rpms higher than peak power so that the next gear you will be in the beginning of the power band. Now in the lower gears like 1st and 2nd the tranny ratios differences are greater than say between 3rd and 4th. So for example, if your car peaks at 6k you may want to shift the 1-2 at 6600, 2-3 at 6400, then the 3-4 at 6100ish. The rear gear ratio will also have a bearing on which gear you will end up in at the traps. And that's were the max rpm comes in. I see that you have a stall in the car so try and play with the shift points in your auto and look at your 1/8 mph speed and final 1/4 mph speed then fine tune it from there. Hope this helps. -Mark

Well heres what the shift pattern looks like on a 0-114 mph run:

I did several passes and every time it stayed very consistent: 6100ish shift point drops to 4500ish rpm. Now I don't have a dyno graph from my car but from most that i have looked up with similar mods the hp peaks around 5500 and starts dropping off good by 5600. The torque seems to stay very consistent for a wide range of rpm so its easier to land the shift in the good zone. Even if I lower my shift points to 5600 it looks like it should still land at a spot that is producing the same tq numbers as it is now.

A properly tuned stock LS1 won't "drop off good" at 5600.

Have to experiment, but as high as you can until you get valve float has worked for most folks. I recall some folks pushing 6200 with stock valve springs.

If it were me I'd do some Z06 valve springs and shift it at 6250.

Good luck getting it to shift within 50 RPM everytime.
