you should have the same depth as the diameter of the stud at a very minimum.

I think as an engineering rule of thumb it should 1.5 times the diameter of the wheel stud.

A very wise man once shared that info with me.

Usually what ever the diameter of the bolt or stud, but on wheels I would go with the 1.5 rule.

All wheel studs (not just on the drive wheels) must extend into the hex portion of the lug nut a distance equal to the diameter of the stud.
Per NHRA rules

IMO, if the stud sticks out of the end of the lug you're good.

I know blah blah your street rims will look funny, but I'd rather have that problem then have a wheel melt off the car because ya tried to get away with too short a stud.

.

Diameter of stud is actually one of the better NHRA rules. Easy to remember & more than strong enough to be safe.

The ARP studs have a tensile strength of like 180kpsi or more which is alot more than the grade 8 stock studs. That alone should make you feel good. The 1.5 rule is a good rule of thumb for thread engagement. If you think about it, the summation of the thread shear area will be greater (using the 1.5 rule) than the crossection area of the bolt itself, meaning that the bolt will shear before the threads shear. So, with the 1.5 rule you know you are good. 1/2" arp studs (x 2.5" long) should be good for most all applications. Unless you are running single digits then I would go with 5/8" studs.

ok, i am going to lay it down for u right now... i have done 30 studs on my car in the past month because of this crapola!

2.5" arp's are more then safe.... but they r not IHRA/NHRA legal

if you are running weld skinnies with a spacer up front... the 2.5" will be like 5 or 6 mm too short (i kno ****** bullshit) go with the 3.25" to avoid any issues... im installing 2 sets friday. i hate bullshit rules...

i think that rule should only apply to the rear wheels... all the stress is on them (burnout, launch, etc) the front have some stress (weight) but thats about it... 5mm should not make a freakin difference!

so basicly to be legal and not get any ****... if ur running welds u need 3.25" in front and 2.5" in rear...
