Default using the spare tires for skinnies ?

i saw this dude running around in a fbody using a pair of spares for fronts . now i know this is not safe to do off the top . the factory rubber on the spare is only good for like 50 miles and 40 or 50 mph .
this got me to think though , could a quality aftermarket tire be mounted on the spare rim in order to make a hood fab pair of skinnies ? or is the spare's rim also only good for a few miles and mph ?

Don't -- DON'T -- do it. How much is your safety worth? Space tires are NOT meant to go faster than 50 for a damn good reason. Invest a little into your own safety. So much as for the 'other' -- have a good laugh at him.

A LONG time ago, a bud and I thought about this, but these tires I dont even trust @ 70, most FBodies do 100-120 in the 1/4 If some idiot crashed into me at the track because of that. I would kick the **** out of him.

guys, read the question, its if the wheel is good to mount some drag racing tires to it and run them as skinnies, not using the stock tires duh thats stupid.

The wheel should be strong enough to handle it but I really dont think your gona save much weight being steel vs the stock aluminum 8in wheels so I dont really see the point other than saving some rotational weight. Weld wheels really arent that much if your gona invest in some skinny drag tires anyway.

Even with the rim design, they are not exactly ideal either. With the center section biased heavily to the outside of the rim cannot be good for stability.

Do not run a spare tire as a skinny, I don't care what tire you put on it.
They were designed as low-speed temp replacements to get you to a repair facility.
Nothing more.

I doubt most techs would even let you by with those on your car.

wasup david , yeah he got some laughs from some folks . just imagine a nice looking bird rolling up on spares .
glad to hear i am not the only one to see this and like said i believe this to be dangerous and would not reccommend anyone to do .
no intentions on my part to try or attempt i was just curious as to if it was really beneficial or possible to do . actually seeing it seems desperate as if it was the last trick up the sleeve . that said i was not sure if it was really a trick and led me to ponder what kind of tires were actually being used .

Well, while I wouldn't do it, it has been done. Mustang guys used to do it with the aluminum spare wheels and better tires of course. I have seen a guy use GTO spares (17" I think) as sort of a CCW drag pack to clear bigger brakes on the cheap.

Theres no reason it wouldn't work. Those wheels are probably twice as strong as a Bogart front runner. Remember, they were designed to be used on public highways, even if for only 50 miles thats rougher than any track I've been to.

That being said, I doubt they are very light. I'm sure they are lighter than stock though....

I wouldnt bet the farm on that one either....those steel wheels are heavy.

No real benefit to doing it except rolling resistance at the cost of looking like a schmuck

Yea the spare tire and jack are about 37lbs together, and the tire is more then %50 of that total. Your not saving anything a convo pro or weld rim can't do.

Well thats ******* dumb. Drag wheels aren't even rated for street use because they are delicate, but they allow those right?

NHRA rulebook states that temp spare TIRES are prohibited. Running a spare wheel with regular rated street tires or racing tires seems okay according to the book, but probably a risky idea in some cases.

I could see why a track would say "HELL NO" for the shock of seeing a spare on a car expecting to race down there track. And yes the tires are pretty much usless. But spares are just really really small steel wheels with crap tires. I think if you threw on some mickey fronts, and got em balanced good....hell your fine.

Ive seen worse **** on fast cars.
