Default Modifying the stock steering shaft

I'm installing a set of hedman hustler 1-7/8 headers on my 95 firebird. The headers hit the rag joint on the steering shaft. I know if I delete the rag joint the headers will fit. I really don't want to go with a manual rack cause I really don't want to spend the money. I have a flaming river u-joint #FR1759DD. It has 17mm DD X 3/4 DD. Anyone do this without installing a manual rack?
