Painting weld in roll bars
You need to get them painted after they are welded in... How much and where do you guys get them paitned?
Do you paint them your selves? I would love to do that.

Re: Painting weld in roll bars
I just covered everything in newspaper, taped it off fairly well and busted out the spray paint. A couple coats of black and a coat of clear. I will be getting it covered later on so I just wanted something to prevent rusting.

I started taping newspaper down (err, and up also) last night...
Lots of newspaper. It'll be another week before I have enough, I think. The Waco Trib is pretty thin.

old blankets work.. just dont let your mom or wife know you painted them up LMAO
i plan on doing mine myself.. CAT3 did his own and a few others and they look great. He emailed me some pointers(thanks man).
you could paint the pain parts before you install them. Just leave 4-6 inches from the edges undone, then touch those up after its in the car.

Re: Painting weld in roll bars
I had my whole cage painted then ground the paint off just where the welds were going then all I had to do was a touch up the welds. Came out great...

newspapers? too much work. Go to home depot/ lowes and get a reasonably thick plastic drop cloth, that way you can cover the entire car and slit the drop cloth to fit over the bar then tape it up.

Magnus, Spray...Krylon works great, quick dry time and easy cover, and touch up. Plus you cant beat the color match if you have tan interior
I knew I should have saved the write up I did for 98TAuto.. If you still have it could you forward it too Magnus? Thanks.

Re: Painting weld in roll bars
I painted mine in a booth outside the car (having short down bars and swingouts allowed for this). taped off the bottom 3/4" of each point to allow it to be welded to the car.

After the paint cured for a day or so it was placed in the car and welded to the mounting plates.

Here's the plan. Head to Home Depot and get a few big packs of the thin mil plastic covering for painting. Lay one so it covers the outside of the car. Run another so it goes from the outsid of the trunk through to the inside of the car along the roof and over the bar then down the back of the front seats. Lay another sheet from the rear seats to the back of the trunk. Cover the insides and the outside of the doors and the front seats.
Hi your local Home/Auto paint store. Tell them you are paint a roll cage in the car with cans. They will recomend a cleaner and primer appropriate for Milled or Chrom moly steel. They will set you up with a self etching primer, 2 cans of 15-16 ozs in black or grey. Pick your favorite color mid sheen or semi gloss enamal and get 4-5 cans 15-16 ozs to put two good full coats on. This will leave you with some for touch up work for the first year.
Keep a box top handy for blocking areas that get exposed as the plastic shifts while you're climbing around in there paintings. Where the latex gloves with a new set per can because you're going to tear them up moving around in there. Get all the other cars out of the garage for the day because this stuff hangs in the air. Allow for two days to get it done since most self etching primers work best if painted on within the first 18-24 hours.
Plastic, tape, sand, clean, prime, paint, paint and touch up, and then peel the plastic and enjoy. Don't panic if you sneeze black for a few days.

Don't forget the SFI 45.1 padding around your head. Don't use pipe insulation.
