swapped cams and added FAST 78

viper, i think u should have kept the X1 and put the ported fast setup and seen what kind of gains u had. i plan on adding LS6 heads or 5.3 heads and fast 92/92 combo with my X1 and see what i get. just look at jaSSon's combo.. its a simple setup TEA 5.3/FAST 90/90/ X1 = 10.6 all motor!!

My 346 had the g6x3 (relatively big) cam shoved into her as a test mule and was no dog on the street. 360 rwtq at 2800 rpms and pulled hard all the way to 6800!!! I like the cam so much that it is being re used in my new 402. That cam was part of a 346 h/c all bolton build that made 490 rwhp 445 rwtq, and everything is being swapped over to the 402 looking for 510 rwhp 500 rwtq. You should definately reconsider going a little bigger on your cam if you want to see real gains. Just add 4*'s and it will help a lot. What is your compression ratio (scr and dcr) in case I missed it ??

For some reason I thought the X1 had a 4 degree split in duration?
BTW - On my old h/c set up I went from a reverse split cam to a 232/232 .595 lift cam and picked up about 20 rwhp and a lot of torque as well.

IMO,the new cam would warrant a different timing table to get the max out of it..if he just dialed in the A/F ratio without messing with the timing, there's probably some power left in it..

DCR I have no idea that's why I let Ed Curtis choose the cam based on the other engine specs, I'm sure it's where it needs to be.
When I get it tuned by someone that is willing to make more than 3 pulls to tune a car with a new cam then I'll probably have better results.

I'm not sure I could go bigger in cam and bump compression without flycutting and that's not something I'm willing to do.

Flycutting is nothing as long as its done correctly. I drove around from 2005 to 2008 with flycutt pistons and no issues at all. Sean at LGM cut the pistons to make room for the g5x3 I had installed in July 2005. When my old motor came out (making room for my 402 that is now being broke in for final tuning) and my afr's were pulled everything looked just fine. Pistons were in perfect shape. It seems to me that if flycutting were something that was going to destroy your pistons then why is it done so often ?? Myself and a lot of people have 10's of thousands of miles on these flycutt pistons without any issue at all. Just saying this so you don't rule it out.

I have the X1 and was thinking about swapping for a standard split cam with stock ported castings too. As Chrs1313 mentioned, it would be expensive to swap to a 228R, or similar grind when you include a tune, install kit, etc...
Thanks for posting your results. It's very helpfull.

Viper- What were your cam only X1 numbers? I hate how my torque looks like a bolt on car. I want to be over 400lbs of torque if I add heads. (I doubt I can gain 42lbs with a tune and new heads)

Maybe I missed it, but you said they didn't retune it? If so, it's not even worth posting a dyno chart right now. The FAST 90 leans the car out almost a complete point in alot of cases. That screws up the existing tune like whoa.

yeah that is true his setup is more track oriented but jaSSons H/C combo of TEA 5.3 heads/ FAST 90/90 just a simple setup that works. im still up in the air on 5.3 or LS6 heads. my car is just a fun daily driver street car. its not worth the cost for me to swap out a proven cam espeically when im not out to set records or anything. there are guys that put heads on there X1 and still made power. im just trying to shoot for 430-440hp range. i think its very reachable since im already at 400rwhp stock heads.

On a serious note those specs are pretty decent, and around what I run in my 346 cars.
Mark I wouldn't mess with the car anymore. It's not worth spending a whole bunch more time and money for 20 more rwhp. Just rock it till the wheels fall off, and build a bigger motor for it when you're ready. The car has always been down on power judging by what you told me per our phone conversation, so more than likely you got a Friday short block that just isn't going to make a lot of power.

Yeah, all I'm gonna do it pull the tune and let some people look over it just to make sure it's close. I have a lightweight RPS clutch/flywheel and was going to do an underdrive pulley anyway since I found a small groove in mine when I did the cam, those two alone should be worth 10-15rwhp, the clutch setup drops 24lbs of rotational mass. Then I'm done!

It shouldnt really take many pulls to tune it with those similiar cams. IMO
