Cam only LS7 dissapointing dyno numbers

sometimes engines do weird things. I thought I'd peak around 6300 with my setup. Instead I peak at 5800 haha. Still make the numbers i should though so I'm happy with that. So many little things add up on different setups. I definatrly think the springs need to be addressed. I'm not convinced the cam is going to make a huge difference though. OP might pick up 20 tops from the cam change.

I wanted to post an update. My engine builder got it torn down yesterday and found that it does indeed have flat top Diamond pistons, & ARP rod bolts. When he pulled the rod cap from the #1 rod the piston fell out on its own. The top and bottom ring gap was .080. He said it appeared to him that the previous builder just ordered rings and did not check the fit. It is obvious from the inside of the intake and combustion chambers that it was burning a lot of oil. I suppose this would explain the low compression, high leakdown %s and lower than expected horsepower.

It was originally a GMP crate engine installed by Tatum the sand car builder. The PO broke a ring land a couple years ago and took it back to Tatum. They charged him $6,300 for a new short block that was "upgraded" w Diamond pistons, arp head studs/rod bolts.

You were correct. The valve faces, seats and cam bearings were beat up indicating valve float. We tested the springs and found that with this cam we had coil bind and not enough seat pressure. The engine also had the wrong size (too small) oil rings and the compression rings had between .080 and .083 end gap. Looks like there were several reasons for the low hp numbers.
