Default 2nd gear dyno

So I was told it was safer to dyno my car in 2nd vs 3rd. Lower numbers but still runs perfectly fine. Anyways my question here is a) are my numbers Low for a heads and cam car and b) what can I do to go faster?

The car has ported heads and a decent sized cam, no crazy huge but this one replaced a 228 cam.

It's a 99 Camaro with ported heads, custom cam, ls6 intake, slp intake, headers, exhaust, and the car has some weight taken off

A dyno is normally done in the gear that has 1:1 ratio, at least on older cars. That's 3rd for autos and 4th for sticks. A lot of people have had dyno runs with no issues. I've had a bunch.

Some dyno in 2nd (auto) or 3rd (stick) not to spin the dyno so fast on cars w/ higher rear gears.

most people aren't doing pulls that high on the street...I don't think mine shifts to 3rd until over 90mph

if you have high gears or a high RPM rev limit that will be spinning the tires and driveshaft beyond their speeds they are likely to fail

I've had a driveshaft blow out past it's critical speed once...busted a brand new built 4l60e, ripped the exhaust off, knocked holes in the floor, and broke the pinion flange. Between parts and the trailer home it cost me over $1000

numbers don't matter so I'd rather just dyno in 2nd to see the curve, only downside is some cars like mine need different tuning to have spot on air/fuel in 3rd versus 2nd so I still try to do some 3rd gear stuff in a safe place or at the track and adjust the curve from there

Torque is much lower doing 2nd gear pulls, The Dyno cant load the engine as hard as it can in 3rd gear, i was disappointed when i dynoed my 383 LS truck the first time, it had 32' tires, 3400 circle D vert and 3.42 gears, we were well over 100mph in second gear! On that mustang dyno it made 425rwhp 396rwtq and later on after some more mods i did a 3rd gear pull at a different dyno and put down 443rwhp and 438rwtq fwiw

His trap is a miss with his current set up. I think its a combination of shift points, gear and tire combo.

I agree. You have some more power to show if he had run it up some more.

So should I go get my car retuned? If so by the same people or take it some place else?

I'm no expert but just like the track, you would go through the pull so fast that it would be difficult to get good data unless it was a load bearing dyno. I haven't dynoed my car for a long time but this is the first time I ever heard this. It's pretty poor that a drive shaft would reach critical speed before 7,000 rpm in 4th. Rear end gears don't effect driveshaft speed but obviously everything after the gears.
