I think even with 3.42 gears (which are probably hurting my times) I can trap a little faster.
Y short-shift?

Just to see if I can squeeze more MPH out of the car without gear. The torque drops almost 60 from 5500 rpm onward. I'm going through the traps at the top of third at around 6500 rpm right now.

put gears in it and keep it in its powah. you want the car in it's 1:1 and peak power when crossing the finish.

If you want more mph without gear, you need RPM. Don't pay too much attention to your torque curve.

If you're 360 pounds of torque at 5500 and 300 at 6500, if you're in third that's 400 at the tire and 360 at the tire in fourth

Set your valve train up to rev to 7300 and ride your gears.

My car, at 7300 in first I have more pavement torque than I do in second at 5200 on the upshift, which is where my torque peaks! Torque at the tire is king, which means maximizing your power curve not your torque curve.

For drag racing purpose you should really be well past peak power goin through the traps.

Yes I agree...I just saying you do not want to be at the bottom of gear.

I guess I should start figuring out what rear is good for my car A 9" might be overkill so maybe a strange s60?

I doubt one is more overkill than the other. The 9" gives you endless gear ratio and easy ratio swaps. S60 ring gear setup apparently chews a bit less HP than a 9" but I think that is arguable given it's weight and size. From memory they both about equal each other out in a 1/4 run.

S60 is very strong and cheap but you are stuck with a 3.54 gear being the lowest numerical available.

I think i've about decided myself to go with the 9" probably a Moser setup, because of my T400 transmission I can throw in a 2.75 or even 2.50 center section easily and go cruising and still have more than enough power for the street plus top end speed, then just throw together another spooled center section with whatever ratio I need optimum for the track.

That's not a bad idea, I could do a 3.73 iron center for street driving and a spooled aluminum 4.56 center for track.

Mods:
BTR Stage 4 cam
BTR .660 Springs
LS6 intake (stock)
TSP 1-7/8" headers + 3" Y pipe to a cutout
K&N FIPK

What heads are you running and whats your compression ratio
