With an IVC of 40 and EVO of 51 explains why you didn't like this in the way it drove. Not a good choice.
And secondly you have too much overlap at 11 degrees.
If you had a 226/240 114 LSA +3 you would have only had 5 degrees of overlap and your driveability would be very close to stock.
Or have it on a 115 LSA +3 for 3 degrees of overlap. EIther way it would work well.

You would also make more power and torque off idle till the red line compared to the LS9.
The ASA cam is the cam that GM installed in the 376/525 crate engine.

And no....it's not a very good cam....for a lot of reasons. But it's the GM installed cam, and GM has people thinking makes it a 'top-of-the-line' LS3 crate engine.

I thought I'd post this last follow up to the CO test I did with the ASA cam. This the ls9 cam

at 3 feet behind

And right next to the exhaust

To reiterate. This was before:

For what it's worth, I just replaced the ASA cam in my 5.3L powered Cougar with the Summit Racing "ghost cam" and I couldn't be happier. Here is what I wrote in another thread:

Installed the Summit Stage 1 turbo, AKA Ghost cam. Drove from Alabama to Chicago, did the swap in my buddies garage. Started at 7:00am made first tuning drive at 3:30pm...LOL

Anyway, aside from the theatrics, this cam is way better than the ASA cam. Engine idles down to 750rpm no problem and still has a bit of lope. Nearly no raw fuel smell, ASA cam had 10 degrees of overlap, this cam has -3 degrees of overlap. Idles at 42-44 kPa, while the ASA cam idled at 58 kPa. After a few days of tuning, at WOT the midrange added 30% more fuel and at 6500 added about 20% fuel. It also pulls much harder in the higher RPMs, while the ASA cam was basically done by 6000rpm, and fuel usage confirms this. So not only is in making more torque, it is making more HP, probably 30HP more. On my drive back, checked fuel consumption and got a boost of 2-3mpg on the highway, logging over 500 miles and two tanks of gas.

So yeah....big improvement.

The difference is the LS3 does not have DOD or VSS, and the L99 has both, along with 400 HP instead of 430.
Anything that idles as roughly as the 525 does would not pass a sniff test. Too many unburned HC's. Rough idle indicates intermittent misfire. Comes with the territory of a radical cam.
The lift on that cam is much lower than most cams of that duration. Most cams in that area have close to or over .600" lift.

A friend of mine runs the BTR stage 2 LS3 cam and is very happy with it. He installed it along with the springs and pushrods BTR recommend. Runs 11.60 in a 3900 pound car.

Thanks for the recommendation. My application is regular driving, autox and track days, not the drag strip. Also this is a new engine so seems a.bit silly to replace internals when the car has yet to run properly.

I was only giving drag performance as a measure of HP. He drives it all the time. Drive from Chicago to LSFest numerous times. It's a 66 Fairlane. The cam is very mild and streetable. Would work great for what you're doing.
