A good buddy of mine wants to have a shop build the highest hp n/a LS1 (all alum) motor possible. So, the key questions are:

1. What is the highest hp n/a LS1 you know of or have heard of, and
2. Which shop built and can build it?

It's gotta have the aluminum LS1 block and heads and an LS1 or LS6 intake. It can be any cid and must run on gas only.

 

i would say, go to Allan at FMS, see if he can build a 434 or something like that. should be able to make over 600 or so NA, since he built 408 motors dynoing over 550 NA. however, if it has to be aluminum, you might only be able to go 383, unless you go with the aluminum block ls2.

 

The SAM motor made 800 Flywheel Horsepower. It's an all-aluminum 427 with LS6 heads.

 

Actually your post raises a couple of points:

1. I would prefer to deal with flywheel hp made on an engine dyno, but most people test on a chassis dyno,
2. Technically, he said they have to be LS1 heads, but he would probably accept any aluminum LSX head,
3. I didn't know SAM would sell such a motor commercially.

 

more performance had a 700+hp n/a motor, if i remember correctly they used a c5r block. big $$

anyway, why shoot for peak hp?? its just a number, why doesnt he built a strong motor with good low-end/midrange.

after all, we build our cars to race, not brag about peak hp on a dyno.

if you really care about peak HP, go buy a supra and put a big turbo.

 

1. SAM only uses an engine dyno. We have a Superflow SF-901.
2. By LS1 head he probably mean non-C5R heads.
3. SAM will build the motor for him if he's got $$$, and lots of it.

 

Are we talking 91 to 94 octane or 100 octane and above setup?

 

Well, I assumed when he said maximum hp (for drag racing), that we were automatically talking about very high compression (14 or 15:1) thus requiring C25 type fuels.

He's not interested in turbos or s/c, just maximum n/a hp.

I'm sure he is not thinking of C5R stuff, just "LS1, that's my thing."

He said something like, "wouldn't it be great if I could get the major LS1 shops to compete to see which one could build the highest hp n/a LS1 and I would buy the winner's motor."

It's going to be very hard for a shop to spend their own money initially to take the chance at getting beat out by another shop. Anyone of the vendors could produce sick horsepower, but they need some kind of committment from the customer b4 losing their azz on the deal.

It would be difficult to get shops to build a motor with no guaranty that the customer will buy it.

 

It might be difficult but not impossible. Hot Rod Magazine does this kind of thing all the time.

It would need a major sponsor, a bunch of minor sponsors and lots of publicity, but that sounds like an awesome competition.

If we could get Discovery Channel or some such interested, the publicity would be enough to bring in all the hot shops.

This would be something LS1Tech might be able to pull off by getting the sponsors together and seeing what could be developed. I guarantee the winning motor would go for a premium over its build cost. And probably would have about 10 immediate orders behind it.

Ask your buddy if he would be willing to put up the prize money in exchange for the best motor in the land. Say a $50,000 prize he funds and than he can have the motor or donate it to me, whichever he prefers.

We have built motors that make 2.47 hp per cube naturally aspirated, this particular motor made 640hp.............................its an inline 6 cylinder!!! Our motors make power but also last. We have a customer that runs one of our C5R motors in his gyrocopter, that sucker takes a beating!!

Have him give us a call we will take care of him!

 

This sort of thing already exists as the Engine Masters Challenge. Maybe they'll use an LSX motor one day.

Now there's an idea, but it wouldn't have to be isolated to just them, hell, the site or any one of the sponsors, like Thunder, could sponsor such a program. I don't think my buddy was or is thinking along these lines, but I must admit that it has real potential. All my guy wants is the king n/a LS1 motor in his F-body, but he might be interested in such a plan.

 

I believe Futral is still holding the record at 618 rwhp out of a 408. With the funding behind him, I think Allan could produce anything you wanted. Espeacially if you start talking 430+ cubic inches with high compression.

 

The SAM car has 60RWHP on that if you figure a 15% drivetrain loss.

 

Nitrous Oxide is a gas.

 

It's also an oxidizer, not a fuel.
