Default F15 cam only results

I sold the heads off my car back in December and have had a set of stock 853's off 2bseen's car on it since then. I was tuning a bunch of cars at Walker Dynotune yesterday and when we got finished up I decided to see what mine would do with the big cam and stock heads. I wasn't expecting too much with the fresh 4.33 gear'd 12 bolt and steel drive shaft, but it didn't turn out half bad. I'm pulling the F15 out tonight and installing a MS3 in it and I'll redyno next week. After that I'm going to add the FAST 90mm intake and NW tb on it. The first graph is as I drove it down there and the cutout open (67 miles one way) the pull that ended early on that graph would have been a little better than the first, but it blew the wideband out and the operator let out of it, the second graph shows how much was gained by pulling the air filter and belt off it for a pull.
To recap the mods on the car. Stock 31,000 mile shortblock with flycut pistons, stock fuel system, underdrive pulley, electric waterpump, lid, Bo White ported TB, stock LS6 intake, stock 5.7 heads, hooker full lengths with offroad Y pipe, hooker cat back, cutout.
The drivetrain is a moser 12 bolt with 33 spline axles, eaton HD, Richmond 4.33 gears, and a APE chromoly steel driveshaft... spinning 17x11 rear wheels.

Nice TQ curve there..
What are the 853 heads?
I have 241s on mine.... guessing a year difference? (never really paid attention to that for some reason...)

They are stock 99-2000 (and early 2001) 5.7 LS1 heads. They aren't as good as the 241's from what I hear.

Yep, I have to flycut for the exhausts before I install the ported heads though. I'm going to dyno it with the MS3, stock heads, and 90/90 combo before I add the ported 241's.

What is the MS3 cam? What are your feelings about the F15? I am thinking about about either the F14 or F15 for my M6. I thought I had decided on the F15 until I read some post about people not being impressed (one in particular comes to mind where he pulled out an F13 for the F15 and made less power, so he went back to the F13 and found his lost power).

Magic Stick cam from TSP...237/242 .603/.609 on a 113lsa i believe
You gotta remember these F15 numbers are through a 12-bolt w/ 4.33 gears and steel D.S. but as most folks say its the ETs and trap speed that count, not dyno numbers

I'm not a big fan of the F15. Look at my second graph where the operator turned the engine up a little higher, notice how right after it peaks, the power drops off VERY quickly. The cam is very "peaky", it doesn't have a nice flat peak HP. There is no way I'd install or buy a F15 over a F13. My OPINION is that the 110lsa and 107icl of the F15 hurts it, I'm thinking the MS3 with it's 113lsa and 113icl, will have a flatter peak and won't fall off so quickly.

Yes, I did the tuning on it and will be doing Armageddon's car too. I had 7 or 8 cars at the dyno this past Saturday, so there was ALOT of tuning going on

With the LS1s effiecient combustion chamber such a tight LSA is not required like it is on the sbc. Rule of thumb is if you advance the ICL and gain power the cam was too big to begin with and if you gain power by retarding it the cam isnt big enough to optimize the engines potential. A 108 ICL is as far as I like to see them put in at and 114 as retarded as I would like. Just my thoughts

So what did ya do to the heads? stock valves and just a hand finish, or a full port?

They have REV 2.02 intake valves, stock exhaust valves, and hand ported/polished.. overall a really cheap setup. I'll be installing them on the car late next week sometimes and dynoing it again.

The heads are milled .010" and have 220cc intake ports and 82cc exhaust ports- the combustion chambers will be around 68cc. If they were flowed they would probably go 280/220 @ .600 or better.

Them were some pretty heads.

Hey gomer, you gonna be at the Birmingham FBA Dyno Day in May? If so, I may come up there and have you change my cooling fan settings... That and see how much more Bo's TB got me.
