It cost around $4400 for all machine work to block and reworked heads, new cam, new pistons, all new bearings/gaskets, new ARP studs, assembly, tear down of old motor, sonic testing, balance/blueprinting, rods resized, resufaced flywheel, ARP flywheel bolts, align bore, dec/bore/hone,deburr/clean, pilot bearing.

I love the new setup.

Stock 10 bolt w/3.42s. I had to sell the 12 bolt to fund a traffic court ordeal. It was too damn loud anyway. I don't drag race either.

So you're posting up that you made 5 more r.w.h.p. with a stock rearend than Tony did with a 12 bolt 3 years ago with the original setup?????? So if you had the 12 bolt in it, you would've made 10 r.w.h.p. less than his outdated MTI setup. With the moster cam and much better reworked heads, the new setup should have smashed the previous setup.

The FMS408ci is still running strong. I have had other mishaps with the car itself, but nothing has phased the 408ci. The FMS408ci is over a year old and my numbers are still looking good.

Nope. The MTI setup dyno'd:

476.8 RWHP and 491.4 RWTQ on MTI's Dynojet.

I think you're confused with the 434 CID Tony had which did: 524.7 rwhp & 514.9 ft-lbs torque.
I bought the car with a 427 CID w/MTI R1 cam.

The heads also flowed no where even remotely close to what MTI got, verified on two independent benches. Meaux picked up nearly 20 CFM at major lift points over what the heads flowed when disassembled.

Also, if you didn't notice in the first post, Futral found that the block was leaking coolant at the bases. So it had a the potential for earlier failure. I'm much more safe, block wise, with the iron setup for my uses.

I think the engine does well. I'm happy with my purchase. That's all that matters to me

I know you were told when you purchased the car if you'd put a S1 cam back in it, you'd be right @ the h.p. #'s you're now @. The R1 was just put in it fore an easy sell. The owner of the shop I work @ built that car when he was employed @ MTI.

Yes, but I would have still had a leaking block and poor oil usage. I still wouldn't have known about the leaking however after all the PMs and e-mails I had gotten from other large cube MTI owners w/dry sleeve setups and their issues I figured I might as well steer clear of any of those potential outcomes. I like to drive the car more than continually wrench on it. I wanted a more inherently reliable setup. I was tired of losing sleep at night wondering if my setup would be the next to drop a sleeve. Life is too short to worry over foolishness like that and since I had the means to make it more suitable for me, I did.

I have had to replace a LOT of things on this engine/car. I.E. completely ripped o-ring on the oil pump that caused horrid high temp oil pressures, etc. I'm making roughly the same power w/20 less cubic inches, also. The cam is also only slightly bigger than the S1, it doesn't dwarf the S1 by any means, the S1 is 244/244 .612/.612. I do have more lift and just a tad more duration, 2* on intake and 6 on the exhaust.

I'm MUCH more content with the setup and entire car, now. It's always a work in progress.

I also would have not gotten any warranty with the engine from the get-go. MTI gave me a 90 day warranty on the engine only if I used the R1. They didn't have to give me any warranty so I figured I'd meet their deal. That's only fair.

Those are good numbers Levi, but I think a simple S1 or larger cam swap would have netted you the same results on the old engine. Those are the exact same heads I had on the 434, and I doubt 7 cubes would make much difference in power. Plus, when I sold the car it had a 12-bolt and a big nasty Denny's driveshaft in it.

I think you are correct on the reliability concerns when compared to the previous combo however. I'd still have expected the new combo to bust 550 rwhp given the bigger cam, more head work, and smaller drivetrain losses. Maybe its just the LS6 intake maxing out on you.

Time for an LSX/90

I agree. I'm about the greater potential for reliability.I got tired of having to continually wrench on the car, constantly eye ball the oil pressure gauge, constantly check to make sure no coolant was ever being used, etc, etc.

Who knows what it'd dyno on an actual Dynojet on the same dyno as MTIs or the like. Didn't you tell me that Jayson ran ~31-32 * of timing on the 434 to get those dyno #s in the Cannibal, though? This was all on pump gas and 25-27 * timing at different points. It's not really apples to apples unless things are done systematically and in similar conditions as you know.

This thread wasn't posted to compare setups. It was to show what my new setup did.

If the LSX 90/90 worked well I would get it. I have read of too many issues with it. I actually did have one but I sold it to help fund the new engine. I never expected this setup to dyno 550 RWHP. I really just wanted a more solid setup w/less worry. I have so little time as it is that when I do get the chance to enjoy the car I would prefer to do just that, enjoy it.

Glad to see your happy with your setup. Give me a call and I will hook you up on a FAST 90 setup if you want...it should get you to were everybody thinks you should be.

No fun in saying well if you would have done this and that, you would have to do those changes at the same time using the same dyno to accurately compare......let Levi enjoy his new motor.

I'm interested in the overall package of my car, not just a certain HP #. There's so much more to what I want out of a setup than HP #s.

I love my setup.

I may opt for the port matched 90/90 from FMS and have them dyno it on their Dynojet so at least I can compare it with VINCE's monster

PS, I'm curious as to why observers are expecting I should have made nearly 20-30 RWHP more?

It seems to be right on par with other setups put out by FMS w/nearly identical setups and drivetrains, am I wrong on this?

Vince made made 535rwhp at FMS with the LS6 intake and 3.73s in a 10 bolt, etc. I'm pretty close to that, plus different dynos, etc.

Just curious as to where the 550 expectation is coming from?

Thanks fellas!

I would not worry about what they say Levi. How many can say they make 515rwtq on pump gas? I personally think you would do better with the LSX 90/90 and FMS headers. You would gain even more tq for sure. My car was setup a lil more aggressive via timing and cam. Even after a year people are still trying to catch up to my FMS408ci. You PM'd me on several occassions and told me you were going with a milder setup than mine. Also, it is hard to rework someone's heads. Right now you have a AWESOME combo. Keep things simple and dont let others talk you into spending your hard earned money just because they want you to be a test mule. Leave the test mule stuff to me.

levi your combo is kickin some major butt. like vince said dont worry about it. there will always be naysayers. you know that. there is always someone willing to make it a more race setup to put up bigger numbers. that doesnt seem like your goal.

I was just curious as to where they derive their data to infer what it should/shouldn't do.

Like I said, I love the new setup. It's a great feeling to go out and fire it up and just drive w/out having to stare at the oil gauge, and religiously check the oil, etc.

Sure there were other ways to arrive at my common goal however this is the route I chose.

Different strokes for different folks.

Naysayer???? I'm glad Levi is happy. But as far as 408's go, we shall see, we just got the new Neil Chance converter in Pains old car, let's just say she's pushing a bit more than any other 408 nitrous engine. I'm use to seeing 408's put down 535-550 r.w.h.p. w/ hydralic cams. Good luck with you new combo, seems to be working well so far.
