Am I reading the preload right? I thought those things were pretty touchy on the preload? Seems like alot of people were only going 1/8 turn, or so, to get good results.

I was planning on using the comp stock replacement lifters with this cam. Is that a bad idea?

You're reading it right - one and a quarter turns preload. Here's a thread in which Tony experimented with preload on Comp R's (go to page 2 and 3):

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...R+preload+mamo

I found that setting the Comp Rs to .010 preload cold, as recommended, led to a very noisy valvetrain (noisier than my solid roller big block!). So after reading the thread above, I cranked them down to 1.25 turns, which quieted things a lot (still noisier than stock, though). The dyno runs were made with the 1.25 turn setting.

I don't know what difference a stock replacement lifter would make. I know that Comp Rs are designed with tighter clearances, so as not to "pump down" so much with fast ramps and heavy valve springs. I used the upgraded AFR springs, which I would recommend. I would bet that a substantial number of "disappointing" results from LS1 combos come from poor valvetrain control, leading to valve bounce. For whatever reason, the HR cams available for LS1s seem to be the most aggressive lobes available for any HR motor, putting a premium on valve control.
