Default 395 vrs. 418

I am contimplating rebuilding my 395 and using a ls2 block making a 418, would it be worth it? I will use my heads only open the chambers up for the bigger bore. They are LQ9s with 2.08 valves worked by Sunset motors in Lubbock. I believe they flowed about 310 @ 600. I will probaqbly go with a bigger cam but I still want drivability. I have a 240/244 610 112 ls now. I have the 90 mm Fast already and TPIS loong tube 1 3/4" headers.
The max I have seen on a dyno is 489 rwhp and 470 rwtq. ave is 480 and 460.
So what do you guys think is it worth it or not? and what cam?

You didn't say what you are making now with the 395. I recently finished a 402 that made 523 rwhp & 496 rwtq. The combination you are talking about, should make more power than what you have already seen. A set of stage 3 heads that flow 330 @ 600 will make well over 500 RWHP with 400 plus cubic inches. I'm planning on building a .030 over iron block with a 4.125 stroke that will make 421 cu. in. for our next project. Good luck with your decision.

One thing to remember: you'll need new pistons. Set of forged Diamond pistons with rings should run around $750 or so, and with a refreshing of the heads, you should see some decent gains up top by unshrouding the valve a bit due to the larger bore.

You'll see power everywhere, because the dynamic compression ratio will increase, giving you more torque. That comes from the more CID to "eat up" the duration of the camshaft.

This is the power my current 395 is making. I would like to get over 525 rwhp i found out my heads only flow about 310 cfm so I will need better heads.

You'd be surprised how much 310 cfm will support. If you can find a set of shelf pistons that will fit your build, you can come in much better than $800. My custom Wiesco's were only $695. As earlier stated, the unshrouding of the valve will help alot, plus the added cubes. You could see 525 easily. I'd throw the heads you have back on there and see how they do. If you feel it is down on power, then you can look into some ET performance 255's.

If you're already making 489 with the 395, then by going with the bigger bore will surely put you over the 500 hp mark. Don't change your heads just yet.

blah, that is a total myth!!!

I made 550rwhp with heads that flowed 293@ 600 lift. MID AND LOW LIFT are what count. why don't peole ever understand that
