Default How to choose a dyno facility

I want to get a dyno session to see how much power I make for a baseline. There is a dyno facility in my town that charges $80 for three runs. Or should I go to one of the big shops down by Detroit like Livernois performance or W2W to do a dyno run? The real problem that i have is that the shop around me had a 1998 Pontiac Trans Am, do a 171 HP / 14.5 1/4 Mile Dash. Is their dyno that out of whack or was the car only hitting on 6 cylinders? I would want to have all of my subsequent dyno runs done on the same dyno. I just don't want to see my 99 put down sub 200 hp.

What does ls1tech think?

I think if you go to the local place you should stay consistant. The only place my car has been strapped down since ive owned it is MTI, and thats the only place that it will be strapped down in the future. The point of a baseline is to compare your next pulls to, and as long as you stay consistant nothing else should matter.

If you are looking for numbers, Livernois has a dynojet. Just stay away from Mustang dyno's and you should be good. The only other dynojets I know of are all at ford shops, and they always seem to have a hard time getting the tach signal to read off an f-body.

Go to Livernois.. They have a known good dyno. Also, remember your goal. Just a baseline. The #'s only mean something if you lose power or only gain very little. If you have issues you will have a good shop right there to give you advice.

Like these guys have said, pick one dyno and stick with it... And yes, 170 something horse power is way off. I wouldnt go there simply because dyno numbers like that means something is way messed up and I doubt you cant trust anything you see.
