Wow this is all great information - just by asking a question!

Nitroused383, you asked about the ZZ4 cam specs
ZZ4
Duration @ 0.050" Lift: 208/221
Lift: .474"/.510"
Lobe Separation: 112

If I'm not mistaken I think the LS1 cam is even smaller then this. If I just put in a better cam it should really make things interesting.

This is a awesome forum!

By the way the 74Z weighs in at approx 2800lbs "with" the LS1

Friend has a ZZ4 in his 79 Camaro. Very nice engine but not worth it IMO. Can build a sweet 383 for the same price.

not sure but i think the zz4 came out in '87 and was put in everything, a 350 out of say a 1990 silverado should be a zz4. the main difference i believe is that its a hydraulic roller cam vs the old 350 hydraulic flat tappet

Stock 98-00 LS1 cam:
Duration @ .050 198.86 intake 209.25 exhaust
Lift .498 intake .497 exhaust
LSA 119.45

Stock 01-02 LS1 cam

Duration @ .050 196.37 intake 208.72 exhaust
Lift .464 intake .479 exhaust
LSA 115.92

I would go for the LS1 It is MUCH easier to make power with on a budget and in near stock trim. Add Rod bolts and spin that bottom end to 7200rpm+ You can hit 400hp+ N/A fairly easy, and toss a lil gas and break 550hp/600ft. lbs even easier. In a car THAT light it should be a lot of fun.

Ls1 is FAR superior. 6 bolt mains, 100lbs lighter, 15 degree cathedral port heads as mentioned, coil on plug ignition, 6800rpm useable powerband.

On my LS1 swap (i went carbed) but I'm shooting for 400-420rwhp cam only. Untouched stock cylinder heads and going for 10.90s cam only at the track. I dont think a ZZ4 will do that on stock cylinder heads. Stock for stock they may make the same power but i know the LS1 powerband will be much more useable over a broader rpm band.

How does your 74 z only weigh 2800lbs? I had a 70 firebird an 79 Z28 and i would have guessed both around 3600lbs+.
