Default Hell yeah...got a rear clunking noise!

Noticed a nice rear clunking noise when I am at a slow crawl pace. I was in traffic this morning and noticed it. Not sure how to explain it really, but I notice it in reverse and when I am at an idle or slow mph. I did several searches but not really sure just yet. Any thoughts?

Hmmm maybe you broke a tooth off the ring gear. I would say pull the cover and do a quick inspection of it. If you need help with anything let me know.

Will do.

Ok, so let's say worse case scenario I need to replace the rear end. What route should I go? So far I have no mods, plan in LS6 intake and TB, LT's with Y and I already have a lid and CB.

Also, I hear it when I turn right. I just hate to think a car that only has 80k and wasn't beat on would need a rear so soon. This weekend I will try to get her up on a lift to check it out. Wouldn't hurt to at least change the fluid. Until then if anyone has any other suggestions/comments/experience with this please chime in.

it's the insides of the 10 bolt they are weak. either the posi or maybe just the spider gears either way you can pick up a 10 bolt for cheap money or buy something like a 9" that won't break

I'd bet the posi is shot. Last rear end I had that did that, it was the posi. It would occasionally clunk on slow turns.

So for someone who has no idea what I am looking at/for how can I be sure? If it is indeed that I will be on the looks for a Caprice 12 bolt.

Easy way. Floor it and look for only one patch.

Otherwise with the rear tires in the air when you turn one the opposite should also turn. When I lost a 10 bolt posi it had a lot of play and I could muscle one wheel without the other turning.

My Firehawk still has the original clutch at 116k miles, and it doesnt slip until you go to the track. That being said you know my car wasn't beat on, but it had the rear rebuilt at 75k miles. I would say they aren't the strongest things in the world. I would also say you might relate their strength to a toothpick.

sounds like you need to pull the cover off. on the other hand i have the ls6 intake just came off my 02ss le with brand new throttlebody been on less than 1000 miles. if you need the rearend set up with new gears talk to gary at art walkers on dean drive will do it for 250.00 does great work. tell him travis sent you. talk to me about the intake and throttle body it is wasting space at virginia speed right now as they build my stroker.
