Default Best thing to do?

I love my firebird but I'm somewhat bitter about it.
Bought it for $1250 with 128k miles on it. Freeze plugs blew out twice, battery went out twice, spark plug wires had to be changed, brake discs needed to be changed and a long list of other things. Basically its been one of the most unreliable cars my family has had. I still love it though I'm not sure why. I've spent about $1800 on just repairs. Car hasn't had any problems for 3 months now and I don't think its going to because I've replaced so much.
Now all I want to do is get rid of it but I don't think many people are going to be interested in buying. Dealer said they'd give me $2000. Should I try to sell locally and see if anyone will buy for the KBB price on a good condition firebird? or should i just stick it out and wait for another mechanical problem...?

frustration.

a car with that kind of mileage will need frequent repair. if you like it and can afford to maintain it keep it.

Wait...you bought a car for $1250 and you didn't expect it to need some work?

No I knew it would need some work but its been continuous, not to mention when we bought it the guy claimed it was in fine condition with no problems. And it didn't have any until I bought it from him. And the original price was $1900 and I talked him down because he was cheap. I understand it could have some problems but its the same problems over and over again.

At 128k miles you can expect there to be high milage maintenence, and possibly some other things. Also you only paid $1250 for the car and it's 14 years old. At that point if I picked up a car for that price and the age/wear it'd only be as a project car to build up.

Ya I just needed a car quick as I couldn't rely on others for a car. I should have been more patient but I wasn't and now I am somewhat regretting it. Should I try to trade it in and cut my losses?

I would either take the 2k or list it for sale for 2500. I doubt you will get 3k but who knows.

no offense but if i was looking for a reliable, cheap car. a 3.4 firebird would be last on my list. your buddy with the prelude had the right idea, change the oil and nothing else and it will run forever...my first car was a honda prelude. good on gas and cheap to insure, i had a blast in it and got to learn the road without ever having to do more than a brake job and a few oil changes...you might want to consider that route from what this thread sounds like

Ya I realize I made a mistake with the purchase, and I didn't make this thread to whine. Just interested to see what other people think would be the best route. And I plan on buying a Honda if I can sell my car. I know, to the dark side I go but until I'm more financially secure I'd rather not have to worry about reliability, like you said. And about selling it, I have one guy thats interested wants to see it but he offered $3100 if I tint the tail lights(I have VHT Nightshade) and put on a Pontiac windshield sticker for him. I'll see if it goes through.

For the reasons you bought the car, a honda would be the way to go. Its not going to the dark side, your using it as a daily driver, not putting on a fart can and a wing. Its just sensible, sell the car and get the honda for reliability if thats what you want. Save the money that you would be putting into the firebird to keep it running and eventually buy a nice ls1 powered car.

DEF. if you can get 3100 for it. Nothing wrong with a foreign car, just depends what you do with it. I daily drive a Toyota 4Runner. In 33,000 miles i have done nothing but routine stuff and replaced a bad plug a couple weeks ago...

Ya well I owe my dad(17 years old here ) around 1500 dollars so 3100-1500=1600 for myself. I have a decent paying job($8.25) so I figure if I can be patient for 3 months I can raise another 1800 almost and then put a good down payment on a car that I actually want and will be reliable. Thanks for the advice.
And no, I would really like to find a clean integra gsr and just do small visuals and thats about it. My friend has a 99 prelude sh all riced out "aerodynamic" wing for a fwd car. Makes sense. I can't talk any sense into him, any guys with camaro's or trans am wanna kick his *** and show him a real car? lol.
