Best place to get started is on cnet for their reviews. Then look for what you want. LCD I would go with LG (Samsung) or if Plasma I would look into a Panasonic. You can get some pretty good deals, especially if you go to Costco.

pay close attention to the contrast ratio...the higher the contrast ratio, the crisper the picture. for example...you'll see numbers like 1500:1....3000:1....20,000:1 and so on. anything lower than say 10,000:1 and you're gonna see pixels on anything black in the picture. unfortunetly, the higher the ratio the more money they are so you'll have to decide and come to a common medium.

I just want to know if I'm looking in the right direction. I was always a big fan of Sony's quality but not their price tag.
I have a Samsung 24" LCD (SyncMaster 2433) for my desktop and love it, and always liked the LG stuff as well.
What do you guys think of this?
LG 47" 1080p

Sony Bravia 46" 1080p

I have that same Sony Bravia but mine is 55000:1 contrast ratio....i love it. good thing about the Bravia is if you get a sony blue ray and/or a Sony Surround sound etc. theres no programming needed, they all sync together which i thought was pretty cool.
that LG is nice though...if its between those 2 id go with the LG in this perticuler situation...has a few more features.

I just bought a Panasonic TC-P50S1 50" plasma from Best Buy a month ago for $1199 with 0% financing for 36 months. I went from a Sony 42" LCD that I love and I looked and looked at plasmas for a year. The stigma surrounding plasmas is really a thing of the past. My new TV is supposed to last 100,000 hours and consumes just a little more power than my LCD. It runs nice and cool too. I'm glad I went with the plasma. Picture is simply amazing. The sounds sucks a bit as they decided to mount the speakers pointing down, but I just use my surround sound instead.
Like mentioned, CNET is a good place for reviews and avforums is another good place. Though, avforums is geared more towards high end stuff. It's pretty much LS1Tech for TV folks.

As for the contrast ratio thing, that can sometimes be filled with BS as well... A lot of companies advertise the "dynamic" contract ratio range which some displays SUCK at the dynamic part...
