Default :Engine Noise- Video Inside:

Here is a video of a new found engine noise I stumbled upon. It is intermittent, sounds like a tick, and sounds like its coming from inside the engine.

Note: Recently we pulled the transmission to replace a clutch and slave cylinder. In the process we lost a 13mm shallow socket. We searched for one hour. We checked every crevice we could from underneath the car (it was on a lift) and from the top. I don't think this is the cause of the noise but I figured I'd throw it out there.

Let me know what you think. I hope it isn't a collapsed lifter or bent pushrod

Thanks
Andy

EDIT: 05/17/10

I found my problem. It turns out that three (3) of my Harland Sharp rebuilt stock rockers were failing on me. The needle bearings were binding at times and probably causing the pushrod to bounce around a little. I got the car back together yesterday and the noise was gone. I will keep an eye on it for the next couple of weeks. The three bad rockers were replaced with used low mile stockers. I plan to purchase some Yella Terra non-adj or new stock rockers when I save up some money and replace them all.

I think to start I would pull the valve covers and check push rods and and the rocker arms. Doesn't sound like a lifter to me

Ok. Maybe this weekend I can pull the valve covers. Thanks

The weird thing is, this noise started happening out of the blue. The car was fine one drive, then after the next start, it happened.

ttt

pulled the valve cover, rockers, pushrods- all is okay

noise is still there. im guessing it might be that stupid socket somewhere although I have looked high and low as to where it could be. I will put the car up on jackstands and leave the engine running to try and hear it from underneath the car. Unfortunately I don't have a tubular kmember and I know that thing has some holes in it that might like to eat sockets.

I would take the belts off to take any of the accessories out of the equation. Not sure if you did that yet, but just trying to help.

I did that on an older car and it helped me track down a noise before.

Yea I'm gonna pull the belts, swap a tensioner pulley, etc after work. I figure do the easier things first to diagnose.

Just tried a few things. The noise is RPM dependent. I removed the serp belt and left the car idle for a minute. The noise appeared to stop. I replaced the tensioner pulley, reinstalled the belt, and the noise was still there.

At this point I guess it could be water pump, idler pulley, power steering pump/pulley

Thoughts?

try the idler pulley. had pulley noise freak me out on both of my ls1's.

try shooting the pulley bearings with some white lithium grease (or wd40 or whatever) with the car running to see if it goes away.

I'll try the WD40 first. I replaced the idler and tensioner pulley at the same time not too long ago.

Take a long a** screwdriver and place the tip against some of the accessories and put your ear against the handle. It will help isolate where the noise is coming from. Can't tell you how many times this old trick has gotten me to the root of the problem. Just be cautious as there are still moving parts and the last thing you want to see get wedged between a moving pulley is a screwdriver or your fingers.

I was using a socket extension and/or a open ended wrench to do that- same concept. I will try the WD40 stuff first

I don't know Brien. After I pulled the serp belt the noise seemed to go away leading you to believe that its accessory related.

Of course, the socket is stuck somewhere between the power steering pump and the alternator. How? I've got no clue, but it's somewhere in that damn engine bay.
