i would by a chevy with the LB7 duramax. thats i believe 02 to 04 or 04 1/2. not exactly sure. imo its the best all around truck for comfort and work. interior is comfortable and great quality. the LT package has a ton of options. outside, it has ifs unlike ford or dodge. some people dont like that tho. wont take quite as much abuse and will be a little more maintenance when it gets to high mileage. but it makes the truck drive great and has a sharper turning radius, which is really nice when pulling a trailer. if you do decide to look into the duramaxes, check out duramaxforum.com. there is a lot of great info there and you will be able to find out anything u want to know.

I'm a die hard gm guy but I'm going to buy a cummins here soon just bc they r cheaper then a d-max (plus I can't afford one right now) and the 98-02 cummins 24 valve motor don't have very many problems. plus they have great power out of the box n the fuel econmoy ain't bad either. but I would not buy a dodge w a auto trans, they r junk. I have a buddy that went threw 2 tranny in 3-1/2 yrs. I myself will be lookin for a ecsb 4x4 stick shift very soon

Allison trans failures?
A friend has a '05 GMC HD2500 Duramax w/just over 85k miles. He bought the truck brand new and very fussy w/scheduled maint. Just lost the Allison transmission....light duty towing only. He's a little disappointed, off warranty of course...anyone else have Allison trans problems w/the GM diesels? Thanks. WJ

Thanks. His truck is stock. He hauls race sleds occasionally in winter and has hauled a 3500lb car to the track maybe 6 times. Bought a Allison factory re-build and had it professionally installed....a very expensive little job. Numerous trans filter changes and dealer oil change had been done less than 2k miles back. He only had a 72k mile warranty....very disappointed because, like you, most everyone says the Allisons normally give good service, unless the trucks are modded and over-revved. His truck was never abused....guess just bad luck. WJ

I'm not expert on diesels, but from everything i gather, cummins is the best motor. Personally i like Ford trucks, i believe them to be better trucks in general, but the powerstroke isnt supposed to be great at all. My buddy has a duramax that runs 12's but i suppose that isnt exactly what you are looking for. Honestly if its going to be used as it is intended, ie pulling ****, i would search for the best deal, cause i think they are all competent trucks.

d-max all the way!!! i would put my truck up to any truck challenge!!! other then mud cause i am lazy. powerturds loud, rust out, leak lots of oil, and ball joints every 30,000 miles. cummins good motor but trans sucks and mini van interior!! lol

Mine needs ball joints now. Powerstrokes definitely have their issues, Not sure about rusting out or leaking lots of oil, but the 6.0s have issues. Most of them are easily fixed, some can be worse than others. Don't know about the other two manufacturers, always thought the Duramax was supposedly the best all around truck.
The Fords look better. They also match my Mustangs much better.

Nice garage!
The trans is well built, but I had a seal fail and the solenoid went bad, took out the direct clutch pack and the parts for the direct clutch. Not a terribly expensive rebuild, but it took me 3 days of constantly calling to get my parts shipped out.
I'll take you up on the truck challenge, but we have to run it back with the cars.

I would just eat the cost and get the extended factory warranty. When your buying a new vechile they will usally discount it like 50% and they cover everything from radio ***** to transmissions, they'll only use factory parts and if you get the gold plan your deductible is 50.00. I have purchased 3 of these plans from Subaru at over a 50% discount and they always give me a 0 deductible. It's good for peace of mind; even more with these diesel trucks as you guys make them sound.
If I ever need a truck I want to get a GM 2500 diesel. Kind of funny how they used to get decent gas milage and the fuel was cheaper then gasoline...now it costs more. It seems if you break the costs down to "cost per mile" the gasoline and diesel is close if not the same.
Maybe one day I'll need a truck, right now I put about 5,000 miles on a car each year and in theory I could get by with a 10 year old beater.
