Thumbs down Blew up my engine today!

Installed a fast 90 yesterday.Today, I decided to take the car around the block to try and diag a sticking throttle. About 500 yards later I felt somthing slip and instant knocking!!! FML!!!!

The car was running great untill about 5 mins ago! I guess its better it popped before I installed the H/C that have been sitting in my closet for the past 4 months. I don't have the money to fix this POS so it will prob rot in the driveway for a while.

102107 miles..... R.I.P.

Maybe because an intake swap takes an hour and swaping heads takes a day or two to do right, measure, check clearences and so forth.

Yea, heads do take some more time, some goofy ground straps you gotta make sure are in place. Plus un bolting the exhaust. MOST times its the exhaust and spark plugs that take the most time getting back in place. Older LS1's (01 and back I think) have messy gaskets which need to be cleaned correctly and al bolt holes need to be CLEAN!!

Most people also need to ensure proper valve train geometery and if the head has been decked often the push rod is off and until you measure you may have to order a new set.

On a side note I recently I did a Fast Ported 90/90 back to LS6 swap and I got a vaccume line (for the HVAC) pinched hardcore and I had to repull and fix. I had the intake off and on with in 20 minutes, a new PB and no broken Oil Press. Sensor!!

Yeah the intake swap was a walk in the park. I read enough walk throughs not to break the oil pressure sending unit. I am going to pull a head with in the next week or so. All the noise is coming from passanger side head. I would love to think it's just a dropped valve but I prob lost a piston with my luck.

I feel comfortable pulling a head now. Can't really mess it up anymore!

Just curious did you beat on this engine alot? I'm at 122K and I plan on rebuilding at some point in the future, I don't have the funds yet, what causes an engine to blow at 102K miles?

Valve Spring failures can happen at any time, hell at idle a spring can fail or a valve drops, it does not need to be @ Redline WOT driving.

If your lucky a rocker just decided to spit out the needle bearings.
Good news is that good LS1 shortblocks only seem to be selling for around $500.

I drove it like a sports car if thats what your asking! I wouldn't say I beat the **** out of the car. Prob only had it to 6k maybe 5 or 6 times the past 3 months. I will take some carnage pics Asap. I'll prob take the intake off again Friday and work on pulling the valve cover this weekend

Im down to 22:31 last time.

Installed a couple gauges, Oil Temp, Oil Press, and Water Temp. The Temp gauges were a walk int he park, but I al trying to keep the factory and aftermarket pressure gauges running at the same times. Requires quite a bit of plumbing...

Put the intake back on, factory gauge reading MAX Psi... WTF. Factory gauge is 1-wire... no ground.

Okay, pull the intake drill a small hole, tap, intall a ground on the factory sending unit. Put intake back on, fire it up... factory gauge reading 0psi. All of a sudden... smoke from under the hood. Factory sending unit leaking... FROM THE PLUG!!!!!

Pull the intake off again, waiting for new sending unit in the mail from GM Parts Direct

Intake off/on/off/on/off in one week.... I can do it with my eyes closed!
