I just picked up the ruger commander and love it. Only have about 200rds through it but loved every one. Don't have and experience with the S&W but I hear good things about them.

Ruger and smith are both nice. Check out ATI. They make a really nice 1911 that comes with alot of high end finishes standard and is usually cheaper then the rest.

Thumbs up

That's a tough call for sure, I love both S&W and Ruger (I own guns from each company but no 1911s yet).
S&W makes SO MANY different 1911 models too.

Ever consider Kimber? I know they are expensive but seem top notch. Personally I don't own either but my dad has a real Remington Rand 1911 from WW2. Talk about fun to shoot.

The fullsize Ruger SR1911 is good to go. I cannot speak to the commander size. If you can conceal a full size(5"), I would suggest going that route as they are much more reliable than the compact sizes.

Also, look at Springfield's 1911s. Great guns for the money. Just look for an NM serial # to be sure it was built in the US.

I picked up a para ordnance 1911 in the commander size, have well over 1000 rds through it no problems at all. My dad bought the same gun, every other was a failure to feed. Anyways, glad you like what you bought, I have an ar 15 for sale if anyone is interested. Would like to trade for a built rearend if possible!

They're usually under $1000.00 but even the base/standard models have been creeping ever closer to that mark lately.
